The AIT1000 can be connected to other AIS compatible equipment via the NMEA0183 connections on the
PWR/DATA cable and/or to a PC via the USB interface.
The AIT1000 USB interface is designed to use the standard Serial Adaptor drivers that are supplied with
Windows, but in case the "Found New Hardware Wizard" cannot locate the right drivers, they are included on the
supplied CD-Rom. Simply plug the USB connector from the AIT1000 in to a spare USB port on the PC.
When you turn on the AIT1000 for the first time, Windows should detect the new hardware and install the drivers
automatically. It will allocate a COM Port number to the adaptor (COM1, COM2, COM3, etc.) and it is this COM
Port number that you have to tell the PC Navigation software, that the AIS is connected on – consult the
instruction manual supplied with your PC Software to understand how this is configured.
A table showing what each of the 8 wires of the PWR/DATA cable does is printed on the AIT1000 Transponder
and repeated below for your convenience;

The most common connection to a dedicated chart plotter is to take the NMEA Output (Orange+ and Brown –)
from the AIT1000 Transponder and to connect it to a free NMEA Input on the plotter. You must then tell the chart
plotter that AIS data is connected to this port and set the baud rate to 38,400 Baud – the standard speed for AIS
data. Consult the instruction manual supplied with your Chart Plotter to understand how this is configured.
NMEA 0183 heading data from an autopilot or fluxgate compass can be connected to The NMEA input of the
AIT1000 and this data is then multiplexed with the AIS data and output on the NMEA Output at 38,400 baud –
useful when connecting to equipment that only has one NMEA input and needs both heading and AIS data. All
NMEA messages with a valid checksum are passed through the AIT1000 and re-transmitted along withe AIS data
on the NMEA and USB connections.
To connect a remote "Silent" switch that allows you to turn on/off the transmission of your own vessels position
(good etiquette when moored or in congested but safe conditions), you will need a conventional toggle type
switch (SPST), connected between the White and Blue wires. This can be mounted anywhere on the boat and
once configured using the supplied proAIS software, allows you to switch on/off the "Silent" mode of the AIT1000
When the remote "Silent" switch is ON (closed) the AIT1000 will be in Silent mode (not transmitting) and when the
switch is OFF (open) the AIT1000 will be in normal transmitting mode.
Connect the GPS antenna (TNC connector) and VHF/AIS (BNC connector) to the AIT1000
Installation Step 4
Turn on the 12V power to the AIT1000
Verify that all four LED indicators on the front of the unit flash twice, followed by illumination of the amber and red
LED‟s.
Installation is now complete. The AIT1000 needs to be configured using the proAIS software – see next section.
