8 Operational Notes

8.1 Connecting the IC Scanner to your PC

When connecting the ICS 105 IC scanner to the computer, make sure to use a USB cable with
a 'Hi-Speed USB' certification (USB 2.0) and a maximum length of 2 meters.

8.2 Placing a Probe at a Specific Distance above a Test IC

Attention: The following instructions may cause damage to your probe, the test IC or both.
Before the start, remove the test IC from the power supply to avoid any short circuit. Keep in
mind that the probe's tip is very sensitive to mechanical stress. Make sure the test IC's surface
is even and positioned level to the surface of the IC scanner's stage to avoid the probe tip
scratching on the test IC's surface during movements in X or Y direction. In any circumstances
proceed with extreme caution.
In many cases it is required to place a probe at a specific distance above the test IC. To
accomplish this task, complete the following steps:
1. Power off your test IC.
2. Move the probe directly over the point of interest while keeping a safe distance to the
test IC.
3. Put a prism right next to the point of interest. Use the prism's sloped surface as a mirror
to identify the space between the probes' tip and test IC's surface with the DM-CAM.
4. Move down the probe using an appropriate vertical distance.
5. If the vertical distance is not appropriate anymore decrease it, e.g. divide it by ten.
6. Repeat steps 5 and 6 under constant examination of the probe tip with the DM-CAM until
the probe tip almost touches the test IC's surface.
7. Reduce the vertical moving distance to a minimum of 20 µm.
8. Move down your probe step by step, while checking the distance between probe and
test IC using the prism and DM-CAM after each step.
9. If the probe is finally touching the surface of the test IC don't do anymore downward
movements! Now move the probe up to the specific distance.
