Connecting a Modem

To connect a modem to your system, complete the following steps:
1.
Edit the /usr/lib/uucp/Devices file. For example, for a Hayes compatible 2400 baud modem
(where 1a16 is the port where the modem is located), add the following entry in the
/usr/lib/uucp/Devices file:
ACU cul1a16 2400 hayes
2.
Verify whether the serial port is working properly by testing it with a terminal.
3.
Make sure the cable connection from the port to the modem is done by using the appropriate
cable and adapter. The most common modem installation problem is an incorrectly configured
cable or adapter.
4.
Test the modem by running the following command at the HP-UX prompt:
$ cu -s 2400 -l/dev/tty1a16 dir
You must see a Connected message (this does not mean that you are actually connected to
the modem) on the console. Then enter the following command on the console:
AT
You must see an OK echo on the console. If not, enter the following on the console:
ATE1
After getting the OK echo back from the modem, enter the following on the console:
ATDT[Phone Number]
Any phone number can be used to check out the modem. If the modem is still not functioning
properly, type a few characters on the keyboard and check whether the TD light flashes on
your modem. Check the cable connection wiring with a breakout box and your modem's
switch settings.
To disconnect from the modem, enter the following:
~.
Your cursor is placed at the HP-UX prompt.
5.
To view the device files that are created, run the following command at the HP-UX prompt:
$ ioscan -knfC tty
The following output is displayed:
6.
To view the major and minor number assigned for a device file, run the following command
at the HP-UX prompt:
$ ll /dev/tty4a8
The following output is displayed:
crw--w--w- 1 bin bin 104 0x040700 Apr 5 03:22 /dev/tty4a8
