5.0 Operation

5.1 Before crimping
• Inspect the crimping head for cracks or other
damage. Do not use damaged crimper head.
Contact ABB tool service.
• Verify crimper head is properly latched.
• Do not use tool on cracked or worn connectors.
• Follow ABB connector installation instructions.

5.2 Making a crimp
1) Insert battery pack.
2) Wake up the tool by inserting the battery pack,
pressing the wake/scan button, connecting to
Bluetooth®, or pulling the trigger. The tool will
sleep after 20 minutes of inactivity.
3) Identify connector:
– Scan Smart™ Lug - To automatically identify
a new connector, press wake/scan button.
The display will prompt for "Scan Smart
Lug". Position connector near scanning
location on bottom of the tool. Display will
show the new Smart Lug Type and Size.
– Standard Lug - To manually identify a new
connector, press Cu/Al
button to cycle between
copper and aluminum. Use

the size selection buttons

size
– NOTE: First select the type, then the size.
The same connector sizes
are NOT supported for
both copper and
aluminum. If an
unsupported connector
size is selected for the
connector type, connector size will
automatically change to a supported size.
4) Place crimping head around connector. Jog
trigger on and off to slowly advance indenter/
ram until lug is held lightly. Do not deform
connector. If head needs to be opened, press
and hold backup release valve. (NOTE: Red
indicator light will flash and then turn off.)
5) Insert stripped conductor into connector.
6) Hold tool securely. Press and hold trigger.
7) When the cycle is complete the tool will switch
off and the indicator will light.
• Green Solid Indicator - Crimp was successful.
• Red Flashing Indicator - Distance or max
pressure not met.
• Red Solid Indicator - Crimp failed.
8) Next crimp.
– Smart™ Lug - If the last operation
performed was a Smart™ Lug, the display
will indicate "Smart Lug" along with size
and type of connector
Example:
Smart Lug
Size: 600 kcmil
Type: Aluminum
Additional crimps will
continue to log under the
S/N 0x321456987452, along with Tool ID,
final dimension, final pressure, date/time
code, and pass/fail until a new connector is
scanned or manually entered.
