    Safety • Connecting a portable generator to an electrical system normally supplied by an electric utility is by means of the transfer switch so as to isolate the generator’s electric system from the electric utility distribution system when the portable generator is operating. Failure to isolate the two electric system power sources from each other by such means will result in damage to the portable generator and may also result in injury or death to utility power workers due to backfeed of electrical energy.

    Operation Section 3 3.1 — Using Your Transfer Switch NEVER run portable generators indoors or in garages, basements, or sheds. Portable generators should always  be used at least 5 feet away from windows, doors, vents, or any other opening. Carbon Monoxide (CO) from a gen- erator is deadly and can kill you in minutes.
