OWL 20 mA Data Logger
Features
The OWL 20mA Current Data Logger provides a versatile means of recording a process signal in a
small, water-resistant enclosure. It is made to connect to 4-20mA type transmitter current loops.
6.1

Description

The 20mA Current Logger measures and records analog 0 to 24mA signals common in process
control and instrumentation environments. The model available is the OWL-500.
How it Works
Current flow through a loop is logged by measuring the voltage drop across an internal 100 ohm input
resistor. This voltage drop is accurately gauged by comparing it to a highly-stable voltage reference
before conversion to a digital value by the A/D converter. The digital values are then processed into 0
to 24mA values by an equation in TrendReader Software.

Setup and Use

This section provides guidelines to follow to get started with the OWL 20mA Current Logger.
1. Connect the cable supplied into the current loop being measured - see Figure 5-1
2. Run TrendReader Software and communicate with the logger by double clicking on the com port
icon and pointing the flashing wand at the logger's optical port. Once the Status menu is displayed
select the Setup option - see Fig. 5-2A
3. Make sure the 20mA Current equation is chosen (#205 in DOS).
4. To start the logging session, point the wand at the logger then select Send Setup.
