WARNING
To prevent accidental starting while servic-
ing, disconnect the battery cables at the
battery. Twist and remove all spark plug
leads.
The timing pointer must be ad justed to in dicate
top dead cente r (TDC) o f the number 1 pist on.
This reference to the position of the number 1 pis-
ton is used to synch ronize the electro nic timing
controlled by the EMM with the mechanical posi-
tion of the number 1 piston.
Always check timing po inter adjustment be fore
using t he Evinrude Diagnostics sof tware Timing
Verification procedure.
Remove spark p lugs. Rot ate the flywheel clock-
wise to approximately 30° ATDC.
Install Piston S top T ool, P/N 342679, into
spark plug hole of the number 1 cylinder.

1. Piston stop tool
Rotate flywheel counterclockwise until the num-
ber 1 piston co ntacts th e tool. Keep pressure on
the flywheel to position th e piston firmly a gainst
the tool. Mark the flywheel directly across from the
pointer. Label this mark "A."

1. Timing pointer
Rotate th e flywheel clockwise until the p iston
contacts the tool. Mark the flywheel directly across
from the pointer. Label this mark "B." Rot ate fly-
wheel counterclockwise slightly to release too l
then remove it from spark plug hole.
Use a fle xible measuring device, such as a piece
of string, to find the exact center b etween marks
"A" and "B." Measure alon g the edge of the fly-
wheel. Mark and label the center point "C."
the
If mark "C" and the cast-in TDC boss on flywhee l
are in align ment, the timing pointer is in the cor-
rect location.
If the pointer alignment is NOT correct, rotate the
flywheel clockwise to align the mark "C" with th e
pointer. Hold the flywheel in this po sition. Loosen
the pointer retaining screw and ad just the pointer
