Chapter 2. Using the Wireless LAN Configuration Utility
The Wireless LAN Configuration Utility allows you to configure wireless clients, evaluate
performance, and display the current status of a wireless network device.
2.1
Viewing the Status Icon
The Wireless LAN Configuration Utility starts automatically and places a status icon on the
Windows taskbar when Windows starts. The status icon is shown below.
If the status icon is not present do the following:
1.
Click the Windows Start menu and click Programs.
2.
Click the Intel® PRO/Wireless 2011B LAN USB software menu.
3.
Click the Wireless LAN Configuration Utility.
The following colors on the taskbar icon show the status of the wireless device:
Color
Green
Yellow
Red

Infrastructure mode
Communicating successfully with an access
point.
Communicating with an access point but the
signal strength and quality are not optimal.
Searching for a new access point because it is:
•
out of range of an access point.
•
connected to an access point, but
attempting to find an access point with a
better signal.

Ad hoc mode
Connected to another
wireless client.
Yellow is not used in
this mode.
Red is not used in this
mode.
