Step 5 — Connect power cords to the MPA 601 and other audio equipment. The
MPA 601 ships with an Extron 36 W desktop power supply.
Connect the pre-wired captive screw connector into one of the two pole, 3.5
mm captive screw outlets on the power supply and the other end into the
power receptacle on the amplifier (see the figure to the right). The power cord
connectors are correctly wired when shipped (see Attention below).

When the 36 W power supply is connected to the MPA 601, it must

not be shared with any other devices.

Step 6 — Adjust the MPA 601 input LEVEL, BASS, and TREBLE from the front
panel (see figure at right).
If necessary, unplug the remote connector from the unit (see step 7, below).

If connecting the amplifier to a system with adjustable volume, set the volume to its lowest point. Then adjust the MPA 601

front panel LEVEL potentiometer fully counterclockwise.
Set the system volume to its maximum volume level (no sound should come out).

Return to the MPA 601 and raise the LEVEL until sound distortion first occurs, then lower slightly until the

distortion disappears. This setting ensures that, whatever the system volume setting may be, no clipping
occurs.
Adjust BASS and TREBLE to preference.

Step 7 — The rear panel lower 3-pole Remote captive screw receptacle on the amplifier can be used for remote control of the
volume by an Extron volume controller such as an Extron VCM 100 AAP, VC 50, MLA VC10 Plus, MLC 55 RS VC, or MLC 64 RS
VC D. These controllers have a built-in VC module that can be used to control the amplifier. MediaLink controllers can also adjust
the audio volume at the source, rather than with the volume control port, via a network connection or by IR remote (see the MPA
601 Series User Guide).
Step 8 — The rear panel upper 3-pole Remote captive screw receptacle on the amplifier affects standby. When the STANDBY
pin is shorted to ground, the MPA 601 goes into standby mode. The front panel power LED turns amber to indicate when the
MPA 601 is in standby. When the TIMER OFF pin is shorted to ground, the standby timer will be disabled, and the amplifier does
not go into standby after 25 min (±5 min) of inactivity. The MPA 601 can still be forced into standby mode using the STANDBY pin,
even if the timer has been defeated.
When the short is removed from the STANDBY pin, the unit may remain in standby mode, depending on certain conditions:
• The input signal is below the input signal detection threshold.
• The standby timer is enabled.
• The timeout interval since the last detection of a signal has elapsed.
NOTE: If the TIMER OFF pin is shorted to ground, the unit will always come out of standby when the short is removed
from the STANDBY pin.
