Emission C ontrol

Certain systems of the engine
and/or adjustments serve to keep
the to xic com ponents of the ex­
haust gases w ith in permissible
limits required by law. (Neverthe­
less, we urgently advise you not to
let the engine run in a closed ga­
rage.) These systems, of course,
w ill function properly only when
maintained strictly according to
fa cto ry specifications. A n y adjust­
ments on the engine should, there­
fore, be carried out only by quali­
fied MERCEDES-BENZ techni­
cians. The adjustm ents o f the en­
gine should not be altered in any
way. M oreover, the specified serv­
ice and maintenance jobs m ust be
carried out regularly according to
MERCEDES-BENZ servicing re­
quirements. For details refer to
Emission Control and Maintenance
Manual.
Driving Econom ically
Fuel C onsum ption
Fuel consum ption depends to a
great extent on driving habits and
operating conditions.
For econom ical driving you should
avoid frequent and quick acce­
leration
avoid frequent slow dow ns
avoid high speeds
Recommended sh ift points fo r
manual transmission
To obtain good results regarding
fuel econom y, the fo llo w in g shift
points are recommended:
S h ift
from 1st to 2nd at 13 mph (21 km /h)
from 2nd to 3rd at 22 mph (35 km /h)
from 3rd to 4th at 32 mph (52 km /h)
Driving in low tem perature
weather, in stop-and-go city traffic
and on short hops, and in hilly
country as w ell increases fuel
consum ption.
Engine Oil C onsum ption
Engine oil consum ption can only
be determ ined after a certain mile­
age has been covered. During the
break-in period, higher oil con­
sum ption may be noticed and is
normal. Frequent high engine
speed operation w ill also cause in­
creased oil consum ption.
