Getting Connected
4
Before you begin, make sure your USB Modem or
Phone has an active data plan, and have your USB cable handy.
Slide off the battery door, and make a note of the 12-character
MAC address printed on the label. The LAST 6 CHARACTERS of
this address are the unit's default password. You will need this
the first time you use your PHS300.
Insert battery and connect the AC adapter to begin charging
your unit, and slide the switch to the 'ON' position.
If using a USB modem, simply connect it to the PHS300. It will
begin establishing an Internet connection. The 'Network' LED will
glow amber then glow green when a connection is established.
If using a handset, make sure your phone is ON and connected
to the PHS using the USB cable that came with your phone. The
'Network' LED on the PHS will glow amber and then glow green
when a connection is established.
Associate your PC
From your PC / Laptop, go to the Wireless Network Connection
control panel or setup, and follow the directions that came with
your PC on how to look for available networks. Your unit will
transmit a network name, or SSID, of "PHS-###", which is list-
ed on the label in the battery compartment. Select this network.

Login to the PHS
Once you are associated with the PHS, open your web browser and
click on your home screen. The PHS will present a 'Login Screen' in
your browser window.
Here, enter your unit's 6-character default password in all-
lower-case letters. Once successful, you will be presented with a
confirmation screen. If you want to skip the login page in the future,
click the 'Remember Me' option, and your PC will be remembered in
the future.
NOTE: This login screen prevents others from using your Cellular
Data plan without your permission.
Once you login, you can access the Internet as you would from any
other Hotspot or network. Your network speed will depend on the
data speed of your phone or modem, the cellular network, and your
coverage. You may change the Login password, but if you perform a
'Factory Reset', the original 6 character default password will be
required again.

Setup Wizard
Many features of your PHS can be set up quickly by using the built-
in Setup Wizard. Make sure you are associated with the Personal
Hotspot, then launch your browser and enter http://192.168.0.1
into the address field of your browser. From here, you will be log-
ging into the router itself. Enter the same default password to log
into the Help/Setup pages. There are 5 tabs at the top of the page:
BASIC, ADVANCED, TOOLS, STATUS, and HELP. Click on the BASIC
tab to find the Setup Wizard.
This Wizard will help you:
Set the security level of your network and passphrase
Change the Network Name (SSID) broadcast by your PHS
Create your own Login and Administrative password.
If you wish, you can eliminate the Login Screen
Alternatively, you can make configuration changes manually.
Security settings are found under BASIC -> Wireless.
Password settings are found under TOOLS->Admin.

Security
The CradlePoint PHS300 Personal Hotspot presents a 'Login
Screen' as a default, just like you find at a commercial WiFi
Hotspot. This is to verify that you are the owner of the unit, and
to prevent someone you don't know from using your data plan.
You may increase the level of security by using WEP or WPA,
which are encryption methods offered under 802.11 wireless. You
may also defeat the 'Require Login Screen' option. These settings
are found under BASIC->Wireless.
Factory Reset
It may become necessary to perform a 'Factory Reset' if you for-
get your WEP or WPA passphrase. If this occurs:
Unplug the PHS300, remove battery, and set the power switch 'ON'.
Using a paper clip, gently hold down the Reset button, located in the
tiny hole opposite the battery contacts in the battery compartment.
While holding the reset button, plug in the unit, and wait until the
LEDs Flash ON, then OFF, then ON.
All settings on the PHS300 will revert to their default state after a
factory reset has been completed. The network name (SSID) will
8
return to the original SSID, and the login password will again be
the last 6 characters of the MAC Address (both printed on the
label in the battery compartment).
Sharing
Managing Others on Your Network
The Cradlepoint PHS300 can allow up to 16 users to simultane-
ously use your wireless network.
Regardless of your security level, you can easily share access in
one of three ways:
1)Uncheck the 'Require User Login' option at 192.168.0.1 under
Basic -> Wireless; or
2) provide colleagues with your Login password (the 6-character
default or one you set up).
Note: If you cannot use encryption due to no WEP or WPA support
in your client device, you may be able to disable the SSID broad-
cast (under Basic->Wireless) and choose your own 'non-obvious'
SSID. This can at least provide a level of 'security by obscurity',
but will not be 'secure' in the strictest sense.
You can remove users from your network by accessing the Setup
Pages and reviewing the Advanced->MAC Address Filter section.
NOTE: It is important to create your own Admin Password to make sure you
prevent unauthorized changes to your Personal Hotspot configuration.
