About Licenses and Protected Files

Protected files are digital media files such as songs and videos that are secured with a
license to prevent unauthorized distribution and playback. The license specifies how
you can use the file. For example, a license may specify whether you can use computer
version of Windows Media Player to synchronize the file to your device, or how many
times you can play the file. The person or company that provided the files sets the terms
of the license. A technology called digital rights management (DRM) creates and manages
the licenses. Because Windows Media Player Mobile supports Windows Media DRM,
you can download and play protected files that you have purchased online. If the license
and your device allow it, you can even play subscription or rented content from some
online stores.
Some media files have associated licenses that protect them from being unlawfully
distributed or shared.
If you want to copy a protected file from your PC to your phone, use the Windows Media
Player on your PC to synchronize the file to your phone. This will ensure that the license
is copied along with the protected file. For more information about synchronizing files to

Note: You can determine whether a file is protected by Windows Media DRM by checking
its file properties (Menu > Properties).

Play Media

Play a media file
To play media files from the library, select Menu > Library to open the Library
screen. If necessary, select a library. Then select the file from the catalogues (for
example, My Music or My Playlists), move to an item (such as a song, album, or
artist name), press Play to play the media file on the player screen.
To play media files from the phone or the storage card, on the Library screen, tap
Menu> Library > My Device/Storage Card to browse the file list and play file(s).
