    Basic Operation OperationButtons ThrottleUp ThrottleupthepowertoyourtrackbypressingthetopendoftheThrottle ControlRockerSwitchfirmlyforabout5seconds,untiltheengine'sheadlightand lightedcarsburnbright. Thenputtheengineintomotionbyfirmlypressingthe Directionbutton(holditforapproximately1second)onyourremoteonce. Iftheengine doesnotbegintomoveassoonasyoufirmlypresstheDirectionbutton,youmaynot havesentenoughvoltagetothetracktomakethetrainmove. Pressthethrottleupfora fewmoresecondsuntilthetrainbeginstomove. Toincreaseordecreasetrackvoltage, andthereforetrainspeed,pressthethrottlecontrolrockerswitch. Pressingthetopendof thethrottlewillincreasevoltageandspeed. Pressingthebottomendofthethrottlewill decreasevoltageandspeed. Theenginewillmaintainthespeedyousetafteryourelease thethrottleuntilyoupressitagaintochangethevoltageandspeed. Youcanaddordropcarsontherun,andtheengine willmaintainthespeedyouset. Whiletheengineisprogrammedtostartwiththespeedcontrolfeatureactivated,youcan opttoturnitoff. Thismeanstheengine'sspeedwillfallasitlaborsupahillandincrease asittravelsdownward. Itisalsoaffectedbytheadditionorreleasingofcarswhileonthe run.Becausetheenginewillrunmoreslowlyatagiventhrottlevoltagewhenspeed controlisonthanwhenitisoff,youshouldadjustthethrottletoalowerpowerlevelfor operationwithspeedcontrolofftoavoidhigh-speedderailments. Whenspeedcontrolis off,thevolumewilldroptoallowforbetterlowvoltageoperation.     Maintenance CareoftheRemoteControl YourRailKingRemoteControlSystemshouldofferyearsoftrouble-freeservice. There areafewthingsyoucandotoensuretrouble-freeoperation: Ifyourtrainrespondsinconsistently,replaceoldbatterieswithfreshones. Donot mixoldandnewbatteries. Removebatteriesbeforestoringforextendedperiods. Donotdroptheremote. Itcandamagethedelicateelectronicsinside. AnyattemptbyanyoneotherthananauthorizedM.T.H.repairpersontoopenand repairthehandheldtransmitterorlock-onmayresultindamageandthelossof warrantyprotection. Lubrication Instructions Theengineshouldbeoiledandgreasedinordertorunproperly. Regularlylubricateallsiderodsandlinkagecomponentsandpickuprollers DONOT topreventsqueaking. Uselighthouseholdoil,suchasthatfoundinM.T.H.'s OVER OIL maintenancekit. Donotoveroil. Useonlyadroportwooneachpivot point. LubricateValveGear LubricatePick-UpRollers LubricateSideRods (DoNotOiltheFlatPartof Pick-UpRollers) Greasing Instructions Thelocomotive'sinternalgearingwasgreasedatthefactory. Greaseengineevery50 hoursofuseoroneyear. Usealithiumbasedgreaseandfollowthegreasinginstructions. Removethescrewfromthechassistoopen thegreaseport. Insertthegreasetubetipintotheportand squeezethetubeonceortwicetoaddgrease tothegearbox.

    CleaningtheWheels,TiresandTrack Periodicallycheckthelocomotivewheelsandpickups fordirtandbuildup,whichcancausepoorelectrical contactandtractionandprematurelywearoutthe neoprenetractiontires. Wheelsandtirescanbe cleanedusingdenatured(notrubbing)alcoholapplied withacottonswab. Tocleanthetrack,useRailKingTrackCleaningFluid andacleanragordenatured(notrubbing)alcohol. Unplugthetransformerandwipetherailsofthetrack, turningtheragfrequentlytoensurethatyouareusing cleanclothontherails. Becausethemanufacturing processleavesacoatingonRealTraxcenterrail,youshouldcleantherailsafterthefirst 30minutesofuse(youmaynoticeanelectricalsmellduringinitialuseasthecoating wearsoff;thisisnormal). Thereafter,keepaneyeonthetrackandcleanitwhenitgets dirtytoensuregoodelectricalcontactandtolengthenthelifeofthetires. Traction TireReplacement Instructions Yourlocomotiveisequippedwithtwoneoprenerubbertractiontiresontherearsetof flangeddrivers. Whilethesetiresareextremelydurable,youmayneedtoreplacethemat somepoint. STEP Removethesiderods(therodsthatconnecteachdrivewheeltotheother)from thewheelsinordertoslipthenewtireoverthegrooveddrivewheel. Thesebolts canbeloosenedwitha5mmnutdriver. Cleanthegrooveusingacottonswabanddenaturedalcohol. STEP Makesuretheoldtirehasbeencompletelyremovedfromthegrooveinthedrive wheel,usingarazorbladeorsmallflatheadscrewdrivertopryawayanyremains. Cleanthegrooveusingacottonswabanddenaturedalcohol. Slipthenewtireontothewheel. Youmayfinditusefultousetwosmallflathead screwdriverstostretchthetireoverthewheel. Ifyoutwistthetirewhilestretchingitoverthewheel,youwillneedtoremoveand reinstallthetire.

Runningtheenginewithoutaprimed smokeunitmaycausedamage Whenthesmokeoutputwhilerunningtheengine beginstodiminish,addanother10-15dropsof smokefluidorturnthesmokeunitoff. Whenstoringtheunitforlongperiodsoftime,you maywanttoaddabout15dropsoffluidtoprevent thewickfromdryingout. SmokeUnit ON/OFFSwitch Afterremovingtheenginefromstorage,add another25dropsoffluid,lettingthewicksoak upthefluidfor15minutespriortooperation. Ifyouexperiencepoorornosmokeoutputwhenthe smokeunitisonandhasfluid,checkthewicktosee ifithasbecomehard,blackened,andunabsorbent aroundtheheatingelement. Removetheboilerasshown below. Removethesmokeunitinspectioncoverfromthe locomotive'sbody(seeright). Afterremovingthechassis SmokeUnitCover andinspectioncoverscrews,lifttheinspectionplateaway andinspectthewick. Ifenginesoundsseemdistorted orgarbledatlowvoltagesorbecomesilentwhenpowerfromthetransformeristurned off,testthebatterytodeterminewhetheritshouldberechargedorreplaced. Test: Puttheengineinneutralandleavethetrackvoltageat10-12volts(high enoughforthelightstoshinebrightlyandtheenginetomovesteadily)for15 minutes. Recharge: Ifthesoundsareimprovedattheendofthe15-minutetestcharge,the batterychargehasrundownandcanberecharged.
