POWER DOWNFEED NOTES
Numbers in the following refer to the power downfeed
components list.
Quill travel
The quill is prevented from rotating by a dog screw lo-
cated on the left side of the gearbox casting (accessible
through a hole at lower right of the return spring hous-
ing). The dog screw (not shown on the parts diagrams)
also limits downward quill motion; it runs in a slot milled
in the outer wall of the quill, about 5 inches long. The
screw is screwdriver-adjustable, and is locked in place
by a 7 mm nut (use a thin-wall box wrench).
Power downfeed OFF
. If the power downfeed is OFF, handwheel 59 and
shaft 46 are stationary, holding worm gear 6 station-
ary.

2. In the Power-OFF mode, the quill can be operated
drill-press style provided levers 3 are pivoted inward.
Downward motion of the quill is stopped by pins 8, one
on the gearbox casting , the other on depth collar 3.
3. In the Power-OFF mode, the quill can also be po-
sitioned by the fine control handwheel, provided levers
3 are pivoted outward. Tongues on 3 (engaged in the
annular groove in 4) push clutch actuator 4 to the left;
the mitered end of 4 drives clutch dogs 7 apart to en-
gage the inner ratchet of worm gear 6. Quill motion is
now imparted by the handwheel, via output shaft 46 and
worm gear 6.
Power downfeed ON
4. The power downfeed system is turned ON by cam-
shaft 58 (Headstock-); this raises gear 40, same dia-
gram, to engage the smaller of the two spindle drive
