11.2 Operational Problems

Symptom
Machine slows when
operating.
Blade not square with
miter slot, or fence not
square to blade.
Does not make
accurate 45- or 90-
degree cuts.
Rip fence binds on
guide rails.
Material binds in blade
when ripping.
Material kicked back
from blade.
Blade does not rise or
tilt freely.
Saw makes
unsatisfactory cuts.

Possible Cause
Applying too much pressure to
workpiece.
Belt loose.
Blade is warped.
Fence not parallel to blade.
Table not parallel to blade.
Stops not adjusted properly.
Miter gauge out of adjustment.
Guide rails or extension table not
properly installed.
Fence locking system not adjusted
properly.
Fence not aligned with blade.
Warped wood.
Applying
excessive
pressure
workpiece.
Riving knife not aligned with blade.
Fence out of alignment.
Riving knife not aligned with blade.
Feeding stock without a fence.
Dull blade.
Releasing material before it clears
blade.
Anti-kickback pawls are dull.
Sawdust/debris in raising and tilting
mechanisms.
Dull blade.
Blade mounted backward.
Gum or pitch on blade.
Incorrect blade for desired cut.
Gum or pitch on table.
Correction
Feed workpiece more slowly.
Tension belt.
Replace saw blade.
Adjust fence parallel to blade.
Adjust table parallel to blade.
Check blade with angle measuring device,
and adjust stops.
Use a square or angle-setting device to
adjust miter gauge to blade.
Re-assemble
manual.
Use set screws to adjust tension against
guide tube.
Check and adjust fence.
Select different stock.

Adjust riving knife.
Align fence with miter slot.
Align riving knife with blade.
Always use fence or similar guide to feed
stock; do not feed freehand.
Replace blade.
Push material completely past blade
