Tires and wheels
This chapter supplements the information
on wheels/tires provided in your vehicle
Operator's Manual.
Wheels with emergency running char-
acteristics
Your vehicle's wheels have emergency run-
ning characteristics. You can drive for up
to 12 miles (20 km) even with completely
depressurized tires.
!
If a significant drop in pressure is indi-
cated by the tire pressure monitor, re-
place the wheel with the spare wheel to
avoid wheel rim and tire damage.
For notes on the tire pressure monitor,
see the S-Class Operator's Manual.
i
Wheels with emergency running char-
acteristics may only be used in con-
18
junction with the tire inflation pressure
monitor.
Check tire pressures at regular inter-
vals and correct them if necessary.
Warning!
In the event of emergency mode tire opera-
tion, vehicle handling capability is dimin-
ished. For example, the vehicle will not
corner or brake as effectively, or accelerate
as rapidly as under normal operating condi-
tions. You should therefore drive defensively
when driving with tires in emergency run-
ning mode.
In the event of emergency running mode, do
not exceed a maximum speed of 50 mph
(80 km/h) and/or a running distance of 12
miles (approx. 20 km).
After driving in the emergency running
mode, the affected tire(s) and wheel rim(s)
must be replaced by a Mercedes-Benz Cen-
ter.
Only tires and wheel rims approved by
Mercedes-Benz may be mounted on this ve-
hicle. Tires and wheels which have not been
approved by Mercedes-Benz may be too
large or could deform under load. This could
cause them to come into contact with the
G
bodywork and axle components and dam-
age the tire or the vehicle.
Check tire pressures regularly for safety rea-
sons. Have the tires replaced when the tire
tread depth reaches 3 mm.

Checking tire pressure electronically

The spare wheel is also equipped with a
wheel electronics unit.
The air pressure in the spare wheel will be
monitored if it is mounted as a road wheel.
i
Check the air pressure in the spare
wheel on a regular basis, as the tire in-
flation pressure monitor does not mon-
itor the spare wheel when it is in the
trunk.
