To
ensure
good
automat ic
transmis sion
operatio n and long life, the followin g addi
tional work is recomm ended in connecti on
with the regular 20,000 miles (30,000 km)
service.
1. Drain the oil.
2. Remove the protectiv e plate and front
oil sump.
3. Clean the filter and the magnet.
4. Check the setting of the gear control.
Adjust if necessar y.
For type 393 and type 399 automat ic
transmis sions, the followin g applies:
a. Feel for the centre of the D position
in the manual valve of the automa
tic transmis sion with the pawl but
ton depresse d.
b. Release the pawl button. Move the
lever back against the stop in the
selector lever housing and note the
clearanc e.
c. Feel for the centre of the N position
in the manual valve with the pawl
button depresse d.
d. Release the pawl button. Move the
lever forward against the stop in the
selector
housing
and
note
the
clearanc e.
The
clearanc es
noted
should
be
the
same. Adjust as describe d in the work
shop manual, section 444. For type 487
and type 489 automat ic transmis sions,
the followin g applies (introdu ced from
chassis
numbers
9978101 5740,
9978600 7567.
a. Feel for the centre of the N position
in the manual valve with the pawl
button depresse d.
b. Release the pawl button and check
that the N position of the manual
valve, and the depressi on in the le
ver segment which marks the N po
sition of the selector housing , coin
cide.
For adjustm ent, see section 444.
5.Check
the
rear
band
and
adjust
if
necessar y.
6.Check the moveme nt and setting of the
throttle cable. The clearanc e between
the clip on the wire and the threaded
part of the sheathin g should be 1-2 mm.
Adjust if necessar y.
7.Fit the front oil sump arid protectiv e
plate in position . Fill up with fresh oil.
3.0-3.5 litres for type 393 and type 399
automat ic transmis sions.
2.5-3.0 litres for type 487 and type 489
automat ic transmis sions.
Steering gear, check oil level
(up to model year 1978)
Interval: every 12,000 miles (20,000 km)
1.Raise the car until the front wheels are
clear of the floor.
2.Turn the steering wheel to Full right
lock and undo the bellows clamp on the
left-hand tie rod.
3.Check
the
oil
level
by
inserting
a
screwdr iver between bellows
and
tie
rod. If grease drops out, refit the clip.
If necessar y, pack with grease (max 1.5
dl).
4.Fit
the
clip
in
place.
This
will
he
facilitad ed
if
the
steering
wheel
is
turned
slightly
hack
to
the
centre
position .
5.Lower the car to the floor.

The followin g lubricati on points should be
repacked with chassis grease in conjunc tion
with an overhau l.
Tie rod ends and upper
and lower
ball
joints:
Pack the bellows 3/4 full.
1_ubrica nt: Saab special chassis grease.
Rear wheel bearings :
Pack with grease.
Lubrican t: Saab special chassis grease.
Inner universa l joint:
Pack with grease. The correct quantity
will be obtained by fully packing the
axle shaft. Remove any surplus grease
once the drive shaft has been fitted.
Lubrican t:
A
soft EP grease
with a
lithium- lead base and which can with
stand wide
variation s in tempera ture
and
load.
Consiste ncy
type

Beacon EP 2, or the equivale nt.
