Chapter
6
When
the
carrier signal
from
the other
end
goes away,
it
is
the
modem's
cue
to
terminate the connection. In areas with
poor
quality
telephone
lines,
the
carrier signal
can
occasionally
drop
out
and
cause
unintentional disconnects.
Setting
register
S10
for
the
default values allows
for
occasional
lapses in
the
carrier
signal.
The
actual
time
window
for carrier
dropout
is
NOT
determined by
the contents of the
S10
register.
Instead,
this
period
is
a
function
of the following formula:
S10
- S9 =
window
(700
msec
- 600 msec. = 100
msec
or
.1
seconds)
When
telephone
lines
are poor, the value of
S10 can be
increased
if
disconnects
are frequent.
The
adverse
effect
of
this
command
is
that
some
"garbage"
characters
may
appear
on
the
screen
if
the
time
is
too
long.
Every increment
increases the length of
time
by
1/10 seconds (100
milliseconds).
Note
that a value of
255
tells
the
modem
to
consider
the
carrier signal
always present.

The
Sll
default
setting establishes
a
touch tone
dialing rate
of
around
7
digits
per second (DPS). This
register
should not be
changed.
Note
that
it
has
no
effect
on
the pulse
dialing
rate.
