How
totest water temperature:
Checkthewatertemperature
insideyourdishwasher w itha
candyor meatthermometer.
Letthedishwasher r unthrough
onefillandpumpoutcycle,then
letthedishwasher f illwithwater
thesecondtime.
Whenyouhearthewaterstop
filling,unlatchthedoorandslowly
openit.
Measurethetemperature ofthe
waterin thebottomof thetubthis
way:

the
silverware basket and
placea candyor meatthermometer
in the watertowardsthemiddleof
the tub. If'thetemperatureis less
than 120"F, y ouwillnotgetgood
washingresults.Higherwater
temperatureis neededto dissolve
greaseand activatepowder
detergents.
Helpful hints: If outside
temperaturesare unusuallylow,or
if yourwatertravelsa longdistance
fromwaterheaterto dishwasher.

Turnon the hot waterfaucetat the
sink and allowit to

dishwasher.
Toimprove washability if thewater

cupsat leasthalf-full w ithdetergent.
Help prevent
spotting
with a rime agent.
A rinseagentmakeswaterflowoff
dishesquickerthanusual.This
lessenswaterspottingandmakes
dryingfaster,too.
For bestdishwashing
performance, u seof a rinse
agentsuchas JET-DRY brandis
recommended.
Rinseagentscomein eitherliquid
or solidform.Yourdishwasher
usesthe solidform.

First, use only powderor liquid
detergentspecificallymade
for
use
in dishwashers.Other types
will cause cwersdsing.
Second, check the phosphate
content.
Phosphate helpsprevent
hard-water m aterialsfromforming
spotsor filmon yourdishes.If
yourwateris hard(7 grainsor
more),yourdetergent h asto work
harder.Detergents w itha higher
phosphate levelwillprobablywork
better.If thephosphate contentis
low(8.7%or less),you'llhaveto
useextradetergent w ithhardwater.
Yourwater department can tell
you how hard your water is. So
canyourcountyextension agent.
Or yourarea'swatersoftener
company. J ustcallandaskthem
howmany"grains"of hardnessis
in yourwater.
How
much detergent should you
use?
Thatdepends.Is yourwater
"hard" or "soft"?Withhardwater,
youneedextradetergent t o get
dishesclean.Withsoftwater,you
needlessdetergent.
Toomuchdetergentwith softwater
notonlywastesmoney,it canbe
harmful.It can causea permanent
cloudinessof glassware, c alled
"etching ."An outsidelayerof glass
is etchedaway!Butwhytakea
chancewhenit'seasyto find out
the hardnessof yourwater.
Keep your detergent fresh and
dry.
Underthe sinkisn'ta good
placeto storedetergent.Toomuch
moisture.Don'tputpowder
detergentintothedispenseruntil
you'rereadyto washdishes,either.
(It won'tbe fresh ORdry.)
If your
powder detergent gets old
or !kmq3y, t hrow it away.
It
won't
washwell.Olddetergent o ftenwon't
dissolve,
If youuse a liquiddishwasher
detergent,theseprecautionsare not
necessarybecauseliquiddetergents
don't"lump" as theyageor-come
in contactwith water.
