calling the monitoring centre at the same time. Telecom will keep periodically
calling the monitoring centre until power is restored.
What if I break my radio pendant? The radio pendants are quite tough and
difficult to break, although it is possible to break a radio pendant given
enough force. It is also possible that the battery will run down after five
years. For this reason the Tunstall PNC monitoring centres allow their staff
to easily find out when you last used your radio pendant. This is something
that the monitoring computers record. If you have not used your radio pendant
for a while they may ring you up and ask you to test it.
Periodic calls
How does my monitoring centre know if my Telecom is not working
properly? Your Telecom can be set to make periodic calls to the monitoring
centre. This is a call that is not heard by you, nor is it answered by an operator.
Your Telecom will simply communicate directly with the monitoring centre
computers to let them know that it is working correctly. If the monitoring
centre computers do not receive this regular call then they will alert one of
the call operators. The monitoring centre staff will then investigate the
problem.
What if I accidentally disconnect the telephone line? If the telephone line is
disconnected then Telecom will warn you by making announcements.
Nevertheless, some faults on telephone lines cannot always be directly
detected. This is why Telecom can be set to make periodic calls to the
monitoring centre.
