Safety precautions
1. Know your machine. Read the Operator's Manual carefully. Know the
limitations as well as the specific potential hazards peculiar to this
machine. Failure to follow these instructions could result in serious injury.
Use only recommended accessories with this unit.
2. Avoid accidental starting. Make sure that machine REV/OFF/FOR Switch
is in OFF (center) position before plugging in Power Cord. (See Fig. 3).
Make sure Foot Switch operates freely before plugging in Power Cord.
See that all personnel are clear of machine.
3. Ground Machine. This machine should be grounded while in use to
protect the operator from electric shock. The machine is equipped with an
approved three-conductor cord. The green/yellow conductor in the cord is
the ground wire. Be sure to plug cord into properly grounded three-prong
receptacle.
4. Remove tools from machine. Form habit of checking to see that machine
is clear of wrenches or other tools before starting.
5. Support work. Support long, heavy work with a RIDGID No. 92 Support.
6. Secure machine. Machine should be properly secured to stand or bench
to prevent tipping. Securely tighten Chuck Handwheel and engage rear
Centering Device on the work before starting the machine.
7. Wear proper apparel. Wear safety shoes, hard hat, and safety goggles.
No loose clothing, unbuttoned jackets, loose sleeve cuffs or jewelry which
may be caught by moving parts.
8. Do not overreach. Operate machine from REV/OFF/FOR Switch side
only. Keep proper footing and balance. Be sure foot can be removed

safely from Foot Switch at all times. Do not reach across machine and
keep hands, body and tools away from moving parts.
9. Maintain machine in top condition. Use sharp cutting tools and keep
machine clean for best and safest performance. Do not use the machine
unless the Foot Switch is in operating condition. Follow lubricating
instructions.
10. Keep work area clean. Cluttered work areas, benches, and slippery floors
invite accidents. If machine is mounted on a bench make sure that tools
not being used are not in any way obstructing machine operation.
11. Avoid dangerous environment. Do not use machine in damp or
wet locations. Do not expose machine to rain. Keep work area well
illuminated. Allow sufficient space to operate machine and accessories
properly and for others to pass safely.
12. Wear ear protection. If exposed to long periods of very noisy shop
operations keep ears protected.
13. Keep visitors away. All visitors should be kept at safe distance from work
area.
14. Use recommended accessories. Refer to Operator's Manual. Use of
improper accessories may be hazardous.
15. Disconnect Power Cord. When adjusting, servicing, or changing
accessories disconnect Power Cord. Cord should be in top condition and
examined at regular intervals.
16. Properly use machine. Machine is designed for threading and cutting
pipe or bolt. Any other use could cause serious injury.
17. Avoid sharp edges. Be careful of sharp cutting edges on reamer.
18. Transport the machine by means of a forklift: - use a sling through the
spindle to lift machine. If machine is on a No. 100 Leg Stand, a forklift
can be used without as sling.
For best service and performance
Simplicity of design and operation have made the RIDGID 1224 Threading
Machine so easy to use that very few instructions are necessary.
1. Use sharp dies at all times - it pays. Dull dies require more power from
motor and produce poor threads.
2. Always use RIDGID thread cutting oil, specially formulated for threads
- increases die life... improves thread quality.
3. For supporting long lengths of pipe, use a RIDGID No. 92 Quick-
Adjusting Pipe Support Stand.
4. Grease main shaft bearings every six months or more often if unit is
subject to hard usage. (Two grease connections inside each end of base;
under top cover). Use a good grade of cup grease. (Fig. 4)
5. RIDGID 1224 Machines are furnished with 220, 240 or 115 volt motors,
single-phase only. Note color coding of wires. Brown: line; blue: neutral;
green/yellow: ground.
6. Plug cord into any outlet which carries the same voltage as the motor
(see nameplate on motor). Be sure motor and power supply are both
the same. 4,5 m of oil resisting cord is furnished with machine. If you
add cord, use 2,5 mm² wire; if 30 m or more is added, use 4 mm². Using
smaller gauge wires will cause voltage drop to motor and machine will
not operate efficiently. Use only approved three conductor extension
cords.
7. Use only 20 ampere fuses minimum for 115 V and 10 ampere fuses
minimum for 240 V and 220 V.

SETUP INSTRUCTIONS

The RIDGID No. 1224 Pipe and Bolt Threading Machine is designed to be
bench or stand mounted. Two Stands are available including a 4 Leg Stand
with Tray and Wheel Stand with Enclosed cabinet.
Mounting Machine on Bench
To mount the Unit on a bench, use four 3/8" bolts in slots provided at each
corner of machine Base. Base dimensions are shown in Fig. 1.
