Checking the Cutting Wheel
Blades
Service Interval: Before each use or daily
Among the most critical elements of the machine is the
cutting wheel blades. They are also the most subject to
damage and wear. In the course of grinding stumps they not
only make contact with the wood, but they also encounter
numerous abrasives and objects, such as dirt, stones, and
occasionally a large rock or buried scrap.
The wear and loss of cutting teeth can significantly impair the
efficiency and performance of the machine. Therefore, it is
important to make frequent checks of the condition of all
of the cutting teeth and replace any damaged or worn blade
sections (Figure 22).

Replacing the Cutting Wheel
Blades
1. Clean all dirt from the cutting wheel and mounting
flanges.
2. Remove the two bolts that hold each cutting blade
section. Use care not to let a section drop and chip
when they become loose (Figure 23).
3. Check each section for cracks. Replace a blade section
if it is cracked or has missing or worn teeth.
Note: When replacing cutting wheel blade sections,
make sure blade section is placed in correct alignment
with blade rotation.
4. Insert the blade section between the blade mounting
flanges (Figure 23), and secure them with 2 bolts,
lockwashers, and nuts.
5. Torque the fasteners to 27–33 ft-lb (37–45 N-m).
