Note: Now is the best time to install a new fuel
filter because the fuel tank is empty.
7. Install the fuel line onto the fuel filter. Slide the
hose clamp close to the fuel filter to secure the fuel
line (Figure 28 ).

Replacing the Fuel Filter

Replace the fuel filter after every 100 operating hours
or yearly, whichever occurs first.
Never install a dirty filter if it is removed from the fuel
line.
1. Park the machine on a level surface and disengage
the blade control (PTO).
2. Move the motion control levers to the brake
position, stop the engine, remove the key, and wait
for all moving parts to stop before leaving the
operating position.
3. Close the fuel shut-off valve located under the
front of the fuel tank.
4. Squeeze the ends of the hose clamps together and
slide them away from the filter (Figure 29 ).

Servicing the Spark Plug

Replace the spark plug after every 100 operating hours.
Make sure that the air gap between the center and side
electrodes is correct before installing the spark plug.
Use a spark plug wrench for removing and installing
the spark plug(s) and a gapping tool/feeler gauge to
check and adjust the air gap. Install a new spark plug
if necessary.
Type: Champion RC12YC (or equivalent)
Air Gap: 0.030 inch (0.76 mm)
Removing the Spark Plug
1. Disengage the PTO, set the parking brake, stop the
engine, and remove the key.
2. Pull the wire off of the spark plug (Figure 30 ).
Clean around the spark plug to prevent dirt from
falling into the engine and potentially causing
damage.
3. Remove the spark plug and metal washer.

Checking the Spark Plug
1. Look at the center of the spark plug (Figure 31 ).
If you see light brown or gray on the insulator, the
engine is operating properly. A black coating on
the insulator usually means the air cleaner is dirty.
Important: Never clean the spark plug.
Always replace the spark plug when it has a
black coating, worn electrodes, an oily film,
or cracks.
2. Check the gap between the center and side
electrodes (Figure 31 ). Bend the side electrode
(Figure 31 ) if the gap is not correct.
