General information on KTM disk brakes

BRAKE CALIPERS:
The brake calipers are designed to be "floating" in this model series , i.e.
they are not firmly connected to the brake caliper support. The lateral
balance ensures that the brake pads have the best possible contact to the
brake disk.
BRAKE PADS:
The brake pads are equipped with a TOSHIBA TT2701HH sintered lining in
the front and with organic ID450 lining in the rear. These linings offer the
best combination of controllability, brake power and service life. The type of
lining is specified on the back of the brake pads and also listed in the homo-
logation papers.

BRAKE FLUID RESERVOIR:
The brake fluid reservoir for the front and rear brake is designed such that
brake fluid does not need to be refilled even if the brake pads are worn. If
the brake fluid level drops below the minimum level, this indicates that the
brake system is either leaking or the brake pads completely worn. Contact a
KTM workshop immediately.
BRAKE FLUID:
KTM fills DOT 5.1, one of the highest grade commercial brake fluids availa-
ble, into the brake system. We recommend that you continue to use this
brake fluid. DOT 5.1 brake fluid is based on glyco ether and has an amber
color. If DOT 5.1 is not available, you can also use DOT 4 brake fluid.
Never use DOT 5 brake fluid. It is based on silicone oil and has a purple
color. The gaskets and brake hoses are not designed for this type of brake
fluid.
BRAKE DISKS:
Wear will reduce the thickness of the brake disk at the contact surface
the brake pads. The brake disk may not be more than 0.4 mm thinner at the

than the nominal dimension
nal dimension at an area outside of the brake pad's contact surface. Check the
wear at several points.

resistance you can feel on the hand brake lever when the brake pads are
pressed against the brake disk) to the size of your hand.
