The chrome-plated parts on your car are plated under rigid
conditions of control and to definite thicknesses of plate, to pro-
vide the ultimate
i~'protection
of the parts against corrosion.
However, salt and calcium chloride are used to clean streets
of snow and ice in winter, and are also applied to dirt and gravel
roads to lay dust. These
'
compounds, if splashed or thrown on
the plated surfaces of your car and allowed to remain for any
length of time, are destructive to this finish because they cause a
chemical reaction which eats through the surface and opens it to
rust. Sea-coast locations and the corrosive atmospheres of some
other localities also are injurious to chrome plate.
If
rust spots appear on the chrome-plated surfaces, their
appearance can be improved by cleaning the affected spots with
a scouring powder of a type which would be used for cleaning
.
