Problem
Subject is not in

Static electricity may occasionally prevent the camera from operating correctly. If this
should occur, try removing and then reloading the battery. If the camera turns on and
operates properly, this indicates that there is no malfunction. You can use the camera
as usual.
Cause
Subject is difficult to
focus on with
autofocus
Subject is not in
focusing area
Subject is too close
Focus mode is set to q
Flash mode is set to a
(flash off)
Drive mode is set to 1

Focus mode is set to
s
Shooting mode is set
to C, y or Q
USB connection mode
is set to [PictBridge]
USB connection mode
is set to [PC]
Remedy
Lock focus on another object located at
same distance (press shutter release
button halfway), then aim at target and
press shutter release button fully (p.41),
or use Manual Focus mode. (p.86)
Position subject in focus frame in middle
of LCD monitor. If the subject is outside
the focusing area, aim the camera at the
subject and lock the focus (press shutter
release button halfway), then compose
picture and press the shutter release
button fully.
Set focus mode to q. (p.85)
Normal pictures will be out of focus if
taken with focus mode set to q.
Set to Auto or b (Flash On). (p.87)
Flash will not discharge in these modes.
Change the USB connection mode to
[PC]. (p.169)
Change the USB connection mode to
[PictBridge]. (p.148)
