8.3 When a function does
not work, check here
8.3.1 Initial settings
I cannot hear a dial tone.
L If you used a splitter to connect the unit,
remove the splitter and connect the unit to the
wall jack directly. If the unit operates properly,
check the splitter.
L Disconnect the unit from the telephone line
and connect the line to a known working
telephone. If the working telephone operates
properly, contact our service personnel to
have the unit repaired. If the working
telephone does not operate properly, contact
your telephone company.
L The power cord or telephone line cord is not
connected. Check the connections.
L If you connected the fax machine through a
computer modem, connect the fax machine
directly to a telephone line jack.
I cannot make calls.
L The dialling mode setting may be wrong.
Change the setting of feature #13 (page 44).
The unit does not ring.
L The ringer volume is turned OFF. Adjust it
(page 15).
L The TAD ring setting of feature #06 is set to
"RINGER OFF". Change to another ring
setting (page 44) (KX-FP145 only).
8.3.2 General
The unit displays "CHECK PAPER" though the
paper is inserted.
L The paper is inserted halfway. Insert it
correctly (page 13) and press {START} to
clear the message.
The other party complains they only hear a
fax tone and cannot talk.
L FAX ONLY mode is set. Tell the other party
the number is only used for faxes.
L Change the receiving mode:
– KX-FP141: TEL mode (page 29).
– KX-FP145: TAD/FAX mode (page 30) or
TEL mode (page 29).
