    3. PRE-OPERATION CHECK Engine Oil CAUTION: Engine oil is a major factor affecting engine performance and service life. Non-detergent and 2-stroke engine oils are not recommended. Check the generator on a level surface with the engine stopped. Honda 4-stroke equivalent high detergent, premium quality motor oil certified to meet or exceed U.S.
  • Page 11 Fuel Remove the filler cap and check the fuel level is low. Do not fill above the UPPER LEVEL line. Your engine is designed t o use any gasoline R + M ( 7 ) of 86 or higher, or that has a research octane number of number 91 or higher.

    GENERATOR USE To prevent electrical shock from faulty appliances, the generator should be grounded. Connect a length of heavy wire between the ground ter- minal and the ground source. Connections for standby power t o a building’s electrical system must be made b y a qualified electrician and must comply with all applicable laws and electrical codes.
  • Page 20 Alert System The Oil Alert system is designed to prevent engine damage caused sufficient amount of crankcase can fall below a safe limit, the Oil Alert system will automatically shut down the engine (the engine switch will remain in the ON position). If the Oil Alert system shuts down the engine, the Oil Alert lamp will flash when you operate the starter, and the engine will not run.

  • Page 23 3. Turn the fuel valve to the OFF position. High altitude operation At high altitude, the standard carburetor air-fuel mixture will be excessively rich. Performance will decrease, and fuel consumption will increase. High altitude performance can be improved by installing a smaller diameter main fuel jet in the carburetor and readjusting the pilot screw.
  • Page 24 MAINTENANCE Periodic maintenance and adjustment is necessary t o keep the generator in good operating condition. Perform the service and inspection scheduled in the table on the following page. Shut off the engine before performing any maintenance. If the engine must be run, make sure the area is well ventilated. Exhaust gas'con- tains poisonous carbon monoxide.

  • Page 26 Changing Oil Drain the oil while the draining. 1. Remove the oil filler cap and drain plug to drain the oil. 2. Install the drain plug, and tighten it securely. 3. Refill with the recommended oil (see page 81, and check the oil level. OIL CAPACITY: 1 .
  • Page 28 Wash the element in a solution of household detergent and warm water, then rinse thoroughly, or wash in nonflammable or high flash point sol- vent. Allow the element to dry thoroughly. Soak the element in clean engine oil and squeeze out the excess oil. The engine will smoke during inital start-up if too much oil is left in the element.
  • Page 29 Sediment Cup Cleaning The sediment cup prevents dirt or water which may be in the fuel tank from entering the carburetor. If the engine has not been run for a long time, the sediment cup should be cleaned. Turn the fuel valve to the 2.
