Working with Wireless Wide Area Networking (WWAN)

Overview

The 7800 has two options for WWAN connectivity, a voice + data GSM/HSPA+/UMTS/GPRS/EDGE
or a data only Gobi radio, which supports GSM/HSPA+/UMTS/GPRS/EDGE and CDMA/1xRTT/EVDO

GSM Short for Global System for Mobile communications, GSM is an open, non-proprietary wireless
WAN system that is constantly evolving and growing.
HSPA+ Short for High-Speed Download Packet Access, HSPA+ is a non-voice value added service that
allows packet-switched data to be instantly sent and received across mobile telephone networks.
UMTS Short for Universal Mobile Telecommunications System, UMTS is a non-voice value added service
that allows packet-switched data to be instantly sent and received across mobile telephone
networks.
GPRS Short for General Packet Radio Service, GPRS is a non-voice value added service that allows
packet-switched data to be instantly sent and received across mobile telephone networks.
EDGE E-GPRS is a non-voice value added service that allows packet-switched data to be instantly sent
and received across mobile telephone networks at a higher data rate than standard GPRS.
CDMA Short for Code Division Multiple Access.
1xRTT Short for Single-Carrier Radio Transmission Technology.
EVDO Short for Evolution-Data Optimized.
Requirements
Using GSM/HSPA+/UMTS/GPRS/EDGE requires:
• a network subscription to a GSM/HSPA+/UMTS/GPRS/EDGE network (you need to know what service
providers are in your geographic area), and
• an installed SIM card that has been activated by the network service provider (see
and/or Memory Card
Using a CDMA requires:
• an active account with a CDMA carrier. The account is linked to the Mobile Equipment Identifier (MEID)
of the integrated WWAN radio.

Antenna Band

The WWAN radio features an internal antenna that is optimized for power output and receiver sensitivity.
This is an omni-directional antenna.
For terminals equipped with the data only Gobi 3000 WWAN radio, there is a penta band antenna that
supports 800/850/900/AWS/1900/2100MHz (HSPA/UMTS), 850/900/1800/1900MHz (GSM/GPRS/
EDGE), and 800/1900MHz (EVDO/CDMA).
For terminals equipped with the voice + data (Phone) WWAN radio, there is a slightly different penta
band antenna that supports 800/850/AWS/1900/2100MHz (HSPA+/UMTS), and 850/900/1800/
1900MHz (GSM/GPRS/EDGE).
