Body water

The often underestimated elixir of life
A healthy human body consists of approximately 50–65  water. With
the exception of oxygen, no other substance in the body has a comparable
impact on so many diff erent bodily functions. Water is involved in all the
body's processes and is found in all of the body's cells tissues and organs.
However, it is distributed diff erently in each region of the body. For example,
the proportion of water in blood, muscles and the most important organs is ap-
proximately 70 , whereas fat contains relatively little water at around 23 .
Among other things, body water plays a decisive role in regulating body tem-
perature and supplying the cells with nutrients, glucose, enzymes, hormones
and oxygen. Water also helps expel toxins and metabolic substances from
the cells, contributes to protecting the joints and strengthening the muscles,
and provides moisture to the tissue and skin.
However, we are constantly losing water in the forms of sweat, urine and
even exhaling. Th e quantity of water expelled from the body depends on fac-
tors such as physical activity, possible illnesses, intake of medicines, hormone
changes, nutrition and even climatic conditions.
Whereas we can not eat food for a comparatively long time without necessarily
suff ering severe health consequences, insuffi cient fl uid intake for even just a
few days can lead to life-threatening health problems. Th is is compounded
by the fact that a defi cit of body water automatically implies defi ciency of
essential minerals (e.g. sodium, chloride, potassium, magnesium etc.) and
trace elements (e.g. zinc, copper, selenium etc.). Th erefore it is literally of
vital importance to supply your body with enough fl uid.
By the way: Th irst is not the most reliable indicator of an insuffi cient sup-
ply of water! We only experience thirst once the body shows fi rst clear signs
of drying out. Th e fi rst signs that the body has too little water could include
tiredness, headaches, a lack of concentration and physical performance as
well as dizziness. Other signs to pay attention to include symptoms such as
