vidual activities as higher than it actually is. Th ese false assumptions along
with frequent consumption of foods that are too fatty and lack of exercise
are seen in the large numbers of overweight people in our society, which
unfortunately also includes children to no small degree. Th is in turn increases
the risk of serious diseases.
Th e key to reducing excess body fat lies in attaining a negative "energy
balance", which means more calories have to be burned than are consumed.
Th is can be done by eating a balanced and low fat diet, which of course has
to be designed to fi t individual needs. For example, someone who does a lot
of hard physical work will naturally burn a signifi cantly higher number of
calories than does someone who primarily works in a sitting position.
To achieve long-term success in reducing body fat, a change in diet
behavior should always be coupled with increased physical activity. Exercise
not only consumes additional energy, but also contributes to developing
muscle mass. Th e role this plays in attaining a negative "energy balance" is
not to be underestimated, because muscles also require more energy even
when they are not being used.
Measuring body fat and muscle proportions, which has until recently not
been possible using normal scales, can help you lead a healthier life. Go ahead
and start living healthier today!
