Precedence in Traffic Management

As mentioned earlier, traffic management queues in the Sensor are configured based on
Protocol, TCP and UDP ports, and IP Protocol Number.
The way the Sensor matches traffic packets with the configured traffic management rules,
follow a particular order.
Let us take rate limiting as an example to show how the Sensor matches the traffic with
the configured traffic management rules.

Push the configuration changes to the Sensor, for the changes to be effective. For
more information on updating Sensor configuration, see Updating the Configuration of
all Sensors (on page 154).
If the Sensor identifies an incoming packet with a protocol defined for rate limiting, the
rate limiting queues configured for Protocols are searched first. If a match is found,
the packet is rate limited according to the rate limiting queue configured for that
protocol.
If the Sensor does not find a match with any protocol defined for rate limiting, and if
the packet is a TCP or UDP packet, the rate limiting queues configured for TCP or
UDP ports are searched. If a match is found, the packet is rate limited according to
the rate limiting queue configured for the TCP or UDP port.
