The SL2500 chassis and SL210t server contain the embedded Power Management Controller (PMC) with SL
Chassis Firmware which is able to monitor power consumption and throttle the speed of the processors
and memory in each node within the chassis in order to maintain a pre-set power budget.
HP provides a command-line utility, called HP ProLiant Power Interface Control (PPIC) Utility, for reading
and configuring the chassis power management modes.
The following Power Management modes are standard and are configurable in the controller
Mode 0: Power control disabled. No power throttling will occur.
Mode-1: (DEFAULT) This mode allows all nodes to share both power supplies and run at maximum
performance. Power control logic will only throttle the performance of each node when the power
draw by the chassis attempts to exceed the load supported by the power supplies. In this mode, the
box is expected to survive an unexpected AC Power loss to one of the power supplies.
Mode-2: AC/DC Redundancy N+1 - power control logic will maintain a power cap value for the
chassis at the DC rating of a single power supply (750W, or 1200W), such that if one power supply
experiences a DC or AC failure, the chassis should remain on-line and operational. Note: The SL PS
redundancy is not appeared in HP iLO and SMH (System Manage Homepage) web page.
Mode-3: User Power Capping - User specifies the power envelope within the capabilities of the
hardware installed. Users run SL-APM or PPIC utility to calibrate the minimum and maximum power
consumption envelope for the chassis. In order to avoid any impact to performance due to
throttling, a User selectable Power Cap value should not be set below the minimum power value
provided by the utility. Power Capping is included with the iLO Advanced or Scale-Out license.
HP's Common Slot (CS) power supplies allow for commonality of power supplies across a wide range of
ProLiant and Integrity servers, as well as HP Storage solutions, and are designed to provide the highest
power supply efficiency without degrading system performance. HP CS power supplies are tested by the
Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and certified through the Ecova 80 Plus power supply program. HP
CS power supply options provide efficiency ratings of up to 96% (80 Plus Titanium) and are available with
multiple power input and output options allowing the customer to "right-size" a power supply for their
specific server configuration. All HP Common Slot power sources are UL, CE Mark Compliant, hot-plug and
support redundant configurations.
NOTE: The 80 PLUS program is a unique forum that unites electric utilities, the computer industry, and
consumers in an effort to bring energy efficient technology solutions to the marketplace. 80 Plus
independently tests power supply efficiency and publicly posts the results at www.80Plus.org.
It is highly recommended that you use the HP Power Advisor in defining the "Right-Size" power supply for
your needs. HP Power Advisor can be accessed at: www.hp.com/go/hppoweradvisor.
NOTE: Mixing of power supplies in the same chassis is not supported. All power supplies must be of the
same type, all, 750W 94%, all 1200W 94%, or all 1200W 90%. If non-matched power supplies are inserted
you will get errors and operation will fail.
Redundant Power: Optional (1+ 1 or n+n redundant) power supplies can be purchased through power
supply option kits (see Power Supplies for part numbers).
