11 Glossary

Analog audio
Sound that has not been turned into numbers.
Analog sound is available when you use the
AUDIO LEFT/RIGHT. These red and white
jacks send audio through two channels, the left
and right.
Aspect ratio
Aspect ratio refers to the length to height ratio
of TV screens. The ratio of a standard TV is 4:3,
while the ratio of a high-defi nition or wide TV is
16:9. The letter box allows you to enjoy a
picture with a wider perspective on a standard
4:3 screen.
Commercial DVDs
Commercial DVDs contain titles that often
consist of individual chapters for easynavigation.
For a movie DVD, a title may be a complete
movie. The title consists of chapters, which are
individual scenes from the movie. This can also
be done for the titles that you record. To
determine where one chapter ends and
another begins, chapter markers are inserted or
deleted.
Composite video (CVBS)
A single video signal commonly used in most
consumer video products.
Digital audio
Digital audio is sound signal that has been
converted into numerical values. Digital sound is
available when you connect audio devices to
the COAXIAL OUT jack. Digital sound can be
transmitted through multiple channels. Analog
sound can only be transmitted through two
channels.
Disc menu
A screen display that allows election of images,
sounds, subtitles, multi-angles, etc., recorded on
a DVD.

DivX®
The DivX® codec is a patent-pending, MPEG-4
based video compression technology developed
by DivX® Networks, Inc. It can shrink the fi le
size of digital video and still maintain the high
visual quality.
Dolby Digital
A surround sound system developed by Dolby
Laboratories that contains up to six channels of
digital audio (front left and right, surround left
and right, center and subwoofer.)
DVD±R
Each time you store a recording or a fi le on a
DVD±R, the space that it takes up can never
be used again. You can erase the recording or
fi le, but you cannot store anything over that
space. Once the disc is full, you cannot store
items on the disc.
DVD±RW
Each time you store a recording or a fi le on a
DVD±RW, the space can be re-used when you
delete it. You can re-use the same disc
repeatedly.
Finalize
To make a DVD±R play correctly on any
recorder, you must fi nalize it. After you fi nalize
the DVD±R, you cannot store or edit on it.
i.LINK/DV/FireWire/IEEE 1394
This recorder is equipped with an i.LINK
(alsoknown as DV, FireWire, or IEEE 1394) jack.
When you connect a DV-format (DVC-SD)
camcorder through a single DV cable, you can
transmit audio and video. You can also control
the camcorder through this recorder. You
cannot connect more than one DV camcorder
at a time to this recorder.
You cannot control this recorder through
devices connected to the i.LINK jack.
