beforecheckingoil level.With engineon levelground,the oil must
be to FULLmarkon dipstick.

checkingthe oil.

Engine Oil
Referto the viscositychart (Figure23) for oil recommenda-
tions.Do notoverfill.SAE30 is recommended for general,all
temperatureuse. Usea 4-stroke,or an equivalenthigh detergent,
premiumquality motoroil certifiedto meet or exceedU.S.
automobilemanufacturer's requirements for serviceclassification
SF,SG,SH, SJ or higher.Motoroils classifiedSF,SG,SH, SJ will
showthis designationon thecontainer.

40 ° F (4 ° C) the use of SAE 30W will result
in hard starting.

may cause increased
oil consumption.

Changeengineoil after thefirst five to eight hoursof operation,
and everyfifty hoursor every seasonthereafter. C hangeoil every

To Drain Oil
Used oil is a hazardouswasteproduct.Disposeof usedoil properly
IDo not discardwith householdwaste.Checkwith yourlocalauthori-
_ties or SearsServiceCenterfor safedisposal/recycling facilities.
Beforetippingengineor equipmentto drainoil, drain fuel fromtank by
runningengineuntilfuel tank isempty.
Used motoroil maycause skincancer ifrepeatedlyleft in contactwith
the skin for prolongedperiods.Althoughthis isunlikelyunlessyou
handleusedoil on a daily basis,itis still advisableto thoroughlywash
yourhandswith soapand wateras soonas possibleafter handling
usedoil.

Drainthe fuel fromthe tank by runningthe engineuntl the fuel
tank isempty. Be surefuelfill cap is secure.

With engine OFFbut still warm,disconnectsparkplug wireand
keep itawayfrom sparkplug.

Removeoil draincap locatedat the end of the oil drain pipe, and
drain oil intoan appropriatereceptacle. S ee Figure24.

Replaceand tightenthe oil drain cap.

Whenengine isdrained d alloil,place enginelevel. R efill w ithapproxi-
mately20oz.d freshoil.Fill t o FULLlineon dipstick. D onotoverfill.

Replacespark plugwire beforestarting.
Transmission
Lubrication
The transmissionis pro-lubricated and sealedat thefactory.It requires
no checkingunlessthe transmissionisdisassembled. T ofill with
grease,lay the righthalfof thetransmissionon itsside, add 22 ounces
of Benalene920 grease,and assemblethe left half to it. See an
authorizedSearsServiceCenterto havethe transmissionlubricated or
to scheduleservice,simplycontactSearsat 1-800-4-MY-HOME®.
LUBRICATION
Afterevery10operating hours, o ilor grease thelubrication points. U seclean
lubricating oil(#30weight m otor oil issuitable) a ndcleangeneral p urpose
grease(grease containing a metallubricant ispreferred, ifavailable).
Removethe tinesand cleanthe tineshaft. Use a file or sandpa-
per to gently removeany rust, burrsor roughspots(especially
aroundthe holesin the shaft).Applygreaseto the endsof the
shaft beforeinstalling thetines.
Removethe beltcover and lubricateall the pivotpoints and
linkageswith a lightcoat of oil. Keepthe belts freeof lubrication.
The chaincase is pro-lubricated and sealedat thefactory and
requiresno maintenance.
HARDWARE
Checkfor looseor missinghardwareafter every 10 operatinghours
and tightenor replace= as needed= beforereusingthe tiller. Be
sureto checkthe screwsunderneath the tiller hoodthat securethe
8transmissioncoverand the DepthRegulatorLeverto the transmission.
