TAKING CARE OF UNEXPECTED PROBLEMS

Engine Will Not Start

Possible Cause
Fuel valve OFF.
Throttle lever in wrong position
Out of fuel
Bad fuel; mower stored without treating or
draining gasoline, or refueled with bad
gasoline
Spark plug faulty, fouled, or improperly
gapped
Spark plug wet with fuel (flooded engine)
Fuel filter clogged, carburetor malfunction,
ignition malfunction, valves stuck, etc.

Loss of Power

Possible Cause
Throttle not set to FAST
Grass too tall or wet
Mower deck clogged
Air filter clogged
Bad fuel; mower stored without treating or
draining gasoline, or refueled with bad
gasoline
Fuel filter clogged, carburetor malfunction,
ignition malfunction, valves stuck, etc.

Correction
Turn fuel valve ON (page 10).
Move throttle lever to CHOKE position, unless
the engine is warm (page 16).
Refuel (page 41).
Drain fuel tank and carburetor (page 46)
Refuel with fresh gasoline (page 41).
Gap or replace spark plug (page 36).
Dry and reinstall spark plug. Start the engine
with the throttle in the FAST position.
Take the mower to an authorized Honda
servicing dealer for repair.
Correction
Move throttle to FAST (page 18).
Raise cutting height (page 11), cut narrower
swath (page 22), cut more frequently when
grass is dry.
Clean out mower deck (page 23).
Clean or replace air filter (page 34).
Drain fuel tank and carburetor (page 46).
Refuel with fresh gasoline (page 41).
Take the mower to an authorized Honda
servicing dealer for repair.
