    GSM 900/1800 Dual Band The Ericsson SH 888 is a dual band phone, which means that you can use your phone in two different kinds of networks – the GSM 900 and the GSM 1800 (also called PCN or DCS 1800) systems.

    Preparing Your Phone for Use The SIM Card When you register as a subscriber with a network operator, you obtain a SIM card. SIM cards come in two sizes. One is the size of a credit card, and the other is considerably smaller (about the size of a regular stamp).

     Close the holder. The Battery Your mobile phone comes with a nickel metal hydride (NiMH) battery. The battery is not charged when you buy your phone, but there may be enough power to turn on the phone. We recommend that you charge the battery before you use the phone.

If your PIN is entered incorrectly three times in a row, the SIM card will be blocked and you will have to un- block it using your PUK code.

  • Page 16 Hiding or Showing Your Number With most common subscriptions, the caller’s number is sent when a call is made. This means that the receiver can see your phone number when you make a call. However, some operators offer subscriptions where your phone number is normally hidden.

    During a Call Your SH 888 has several functions which you might find helpful while you are on the phone. To Change the Earpiece Volume If you want to change the earpiece volume during a call: Press the volume keys on the side of the phone up or down.

    The Menu System The menu system of your SH 888 allows you to control the phone’s functions and to customize it to suit your personal preferences. Each menu contains a list of options; some of these have submenus with additional options. To help you find your way around the menus, we recommend that you use the fold-out on the inside of the cover.

    When you receive a call and the caller’s number is in the Phone Book, you will see the name in the display. Tip! Your SH 888 comes with the Ericsson Mobile Office Suite software. When installed on your computer, the Mobile Office Suite lets you manage your Phone Book from your computer in a simple way.

    Entering Characters In the phone book you can accompany any number you store with a name. To enter the characters in the name, follow the instructions below. Press the appropriate key, 1–9, 0 or #, repeatedly until the desired character appears in the display.

This allows you to send and receive text messages consisting of up to 160 characters. Using the Short Message Service, you do not have to worry about whether the people you want to reach check their answering machines or not.

    Security The Card Lock Your SIM card is protected by a card lock. When you buy your SIM card, you obtain a PIN (Personal Identity Number). Every time you turn the phone on, you have to enter your PIN and then press feature off (see below).
