ADJUSTING
SHIFT LEVER CABLE
Periodicadjustmentof thesix speedshiftcable maybe necessarydue
to normalwearon the cable.Adjustmentis neededif all six speedsdo
not work.The adjustablecable bracketis locatedon the left side of the
mowerbesidethe engine.See Figure18.

Start engineand placeshift leverin the sixth speedposition.
2.
Stopengineand disconnectspark plug wireand groundit against
engine.
3.
Loosenhexnutwhich securesthe adjustablecablebracket.See
Figure18.
4.
Pushbackon the adjustablecablebracket.
5.
Tightenhexnut.
BLADE
CARE
When removingthecutting bladefor sharpeningor replacement,
protectyour handswith a pair of heavyglovesor usea heavyrag to
hold the blade.

Periodicallyinspectthe bladeadapterforcracks,especiallyif you
strikea foreignobject.Replacewhen necessary.Followthesteps
belowforblade service.
1.
Disconnectsparkplug bootfrom sparkplug.Turnmoweron its side
makingsurethat the air filter and the carburetorare facingup.
2.
Removethe boltand the bladebell support which holdthe blade
and the bladeadapterto the enginecrankshaft.See Figure19.
NOTE: Whenremovingthe blade,bladeadapter,etc., be carefulnot
to removeor loseparts aboveit associatedwith the enginepulley.
3.
Removebladeand adapterfrom the crankshaft.See Figure19.
4.
Removeblade from the adapterfortesting balance.Balancethe
bladeon a roundshaftscrewdriverto check.Removemetalfrom
the heavyside untilit balancesevenly.Whensharpeningthe
blade,followtheoriginal angleof grind.Grind eachcuttingedge
equallyto keepthe bladebalanced.
An unbalancedblade willcause excessivevibrationwhenrotatingat
high speeds.It maycause damageto mowerand couldbreakcausin(
personalinjury.

Lubricatethe enginecrankshaftandthe innersurfaceof the blade
adapterwith lightoil. Slidethe bladeadapteronto the engine
crankshaft.Placetheblade on the adaptersuch that the side of
the blademarked"Bottom"(or with partnumber)facesthe ground
whenthe moweris in the operatingposition.Makesurethat the
blade is alignedand seatedon the bladeadapterflanges.
6.
Placebladebellsupportontheblade.Align notchesonthebladebell
supportwith small holesin blade.
7.
Replacehexboltandtightenhexbolttotorque:450 in.Ibs.min.,600
in. Ibs.max.
To ensuresafe operationof yourmower,periodicallycheckthe blade
bolt forcorrecttorque.
BELT CARE
NOTE:Several c omponentsmustbe removedin order to changethe
mower'sself-propulsion drivebelt. Seean authorizedSearsService
Centerto haveyourbelt replaced.
