Use the ghosted legacy text as a guide to modify the live text to match the customer's supplied
file as closely as possible. When you have finished, either hide or delete the Legacy Text Copy to
avoid inadvertent output of the guide text.
There should be no issues if you open a customer's files to edit vector content, but do not modify
text. In this situation, click OK in the opening alert, and avoid editing the text. Illustrator won't
create the legacy text guide or change the text in any way if you do not attempt to edit it.
Type on a Path has been improved in Illustrator CS4, resulting in smoother composition of type
along a path. However, this change in composition may affect the appearance of type on a path
when you open an older Illustrator file. If you don't edit the type, it remains unchanged. But
when you begin to edit type on a path, you are given an alert that you can update to the newer
character positioning of CS4. If you click Don't Update, you can still edit the type, but it will use
the older character positioning rather than the new, smoother CS4 method.
If you want to manually update type on a path, choose Type > Type on a Path > Update Legacy
Type on a Path.
If your workflow includes editing customer files and then returning the corrected files to the cus-
tomer for future use, you face an additional concern. Although Illustrator CS4 offers options for
saving back to versions as old as Illustrator 3, it's important to warn your customer that edited
text in such files may be reflowed or converted to point text or outlines, and as a consequence
text editability will be impaired or lost. In the case of type on path objects that were created in
Illustrator CS4 using the new type on path composer, text composition changes may occur when
saving to Illustrator CS-CS3. When saving to Illustrator 10 and older, the type will be converted
to point type or outlines. Point text consists of small groups of several letters, rather than a
smooth, continuous flow of text. While point text will print as intended, it is difficult to edit
point text without impairing spacing and text position. Keep a copy of the file in Illustrator CS4,
in case further edits are required before the end of the job.
Updating Legacy Text
When you select text created in older versions of Illustrator, you
have three courses of action . It is recommended that you choose
the Copy Text Object option . Illustrator then creates a ghosted
version of the legacy text, showing its appearance in older
versions, so you can spot any unwanted changes . Live text is
displayed in its correct color, and can be edited as you wish .
Updating Type on a Path
When you edit type on a path
that was created in a previous
version of Illustrator, the type
composition will be updated to
the new CS4 method, creating
smoother type flow along the
path . However, this may result
in a noticeable change in type
appearance or reflow .
