2 Apply new thermal grease evenly to the center of the top of the new
processor.
CAUTION: Using excess thermal grease can cause grease to contact the
processor shield, which can cause contamination of the processor socket.
3 Place the heat sink on the processor. See Figure 3-12.

Using a Phillips screwdriver, tighten the four heat-sink retention screws.
5 Replace the system-board assembly. See "Installing a System-Board
Assembly" on page 125.

Removing a Processor

CAUTION: Many repairs may only be done by a certified service technician. You
should only perform troubleshooting and simple repairs as authorized in your
product documentation, or as directed by the online or telephone service and
support team. Damage due to servicing that is not authorized by Dell is not
covered by your warranty. Read and follow the safety instructions that came with
the product.
1 Remove the system-board assembly. See "Removing a System-Board
Assembly" on page 124.
2 Remove the heat sink, see "Removing the Heat Sink" on page 128.
CAUTION: The processor is held in its socket under strong pressure. Be aware
that the release lever can spring up suddenly if not firmly grasped.
3 Position your thumb firmly over the processor socket-release lever and
release the lever from the locked position. Rotate the lever 90 degrees
upward until the processor is released from the socket. See Figure 3-13.
4 Rotate the processor shield upward and out of the way. See Figure 3-13.
5 Lift the processor out of the socket and leave the socket-release lever
up so that the socket is ready for the new processor.
