About Package Relationships

Creating and Editing Package Relationships

Software Manager Reference
In Software Manager, package relationships define which packages depend on other
packages. During Group Distribution, package relationships determine the packages
that are installed and the order of their installation.
See
How Package Relationships Affect Group Distribution
You define package relationships in Software Manager. A package relationship is also
created when you import a patch (.MSP) or transform (.MST) whose base package is
already in the Software Manager database. During the import process, the .MSP or .MST
becomes dependent on the .MSI.
See
About Patch and Transform Import
When a relationship is created between packages, one package is the dependency and
the other is the dependent.
The dependency is the package that is required by another package.
The dependent is the package that requires another package.
You can define the following relationships between the dependency and dependent
packages:
The dependency relationship, which is what should happen to the dependency
package if the dependent package is installed.
The association relationship, which is what should happen to the dependent package
if the dependency package is installed.
Packages can have multiple relationships. Example: An .MSI can be a dependency for
several .MSPs. That .MSI can also be dependent on another application.
If you don't use Group Distribution, package relationships are merely descriptive. They
help you determine what you need to do with the packages to have a properly
functioning installation. Following are suggestions:
When to check relationships
When you make a package
available.
Before distributing a package.
Before testing a package.
Before installing a package.
When a package changes.
Use Software Manager to add package dependencies, define the relationship between
the dependency and dependent packages, and specify the order in which the
dependency packages must be installed.
When you import a transform or a patch and you select its dependency (the base
package) during the import process, a relationship is created between the two
packages. You can edit that relationship in Software Manager.

What to check
If the related packages are available. If not, you
might not want to make the package available.
The related packages that you need to distribute.
The related packages that you need to install on
the test computer.
The related packages that need to be installed
and the order for installing any dependencies.
If the related packages still work.
