• If the replacement procedure might put data at risk, the customer must back up the system or logical
partition (including operating systems, licensed programs, and data).
• Review the replacement procedure for the part.
• Obtain the required tools for the replacement procedure.
• Inspect the replacement part. If any of the parts are incorrect, missing, or visibly damaged, they should
contact the provider of the part or IBM support.
The replacement best practices are as follows:
• For all replacements performed on an operational system, remove only one module from the enclosure
at a time, unless directed otherwise by a replacement procedure.
• To reduce the amount of time required for the replacement, remove the failed module only when the
replacement module is available, unpackaged, and ready for installation.
• Follow all recommended procedures for handling ESD-sensitive devices.
1. Identify the system that contains the part to replace.
2. Attach the electrostatic discharge (ESD) wrist strap. The ESD wrist strap must connect to an unpainted
metal surface until the service procedure is completed.
3. Locate a CRU part to be serviced.
4. Remove and replace the CRU part.
5. Verify that the installed part is working as expected.

Replacing a switch

Complete steps in this procedure to replace a switch.
1. Locate the faulty switch.
The service ticket should include location information. Confirm that the switch location by looking for
fault LEDs on the switch.
2. Back up the switch configuration, if possible. (Customer task)
3. Back up the switch firmware, if possible. (Customer task)
4. Label all data cables that connect to the switch.
5. Label all power cords that connect to the switch.
6. Disconnect the two power cords from their PDU connections.
7. Disconnect all data cables from the switch.
Important:
• Before removing the switch from the rack, ensure that the switch is powered down, with all network and
power cables disconnected.
• Two people are required to lift the switch above 1.4 m (57 in). Check the TDA document to identify
where the switch will be replaced. Replacement locations at 32U and higher require two people to lift
the switch. For replacement locations lower than 32U, one person can safely lift the switch.
1. Unmount the system.
a) Loosen the captive screws at the front of the system.
