EMS node
POWER9 EMS node (MTM 5105-22E) and IBM Storage Scale System Utility Node (MTM 5149 - 23E)
are enterprise management servers (EMSs). Each IBM Storage Scale System of one or more building
blocks requires an EMS. If you have an existing POWER9 EMS node, you can use it to manage IBM
Storage Scale System 3500. You can order an IBM Storage Scale System Utility Node with IBM Storage
Scale System 3500, but this mostly applies to new clusters. Conversion from POWER9 EMS to IBM
Storage Scale System Utility Node is not yet supported. Mixing EMS types in the same environment is not
supported either.
You need a minimum of one EMS node as a part of your IBM Storage Scale System cluster. When IBM
Storage Scale System 3500 is added to an existing IBM Storage Scale System cluster that has a POWER9
EMS node, the same POWER9 EMS node can also be used to manage IBM Storage Scale System 3500.
The EMS node can be ordered as a part of an IBM Storage Scale System 3500.
IBM Storage Scale System 3500 is supported on both the POWER9 EMS and the IBM Storage
Scale System Utility Node. The minimum release level on the IBM Storage Scale System 3500 canisters
depends on the chosen EMS:
• IBM Storage Scale System 6.1.3 for POWER9 .
• IBM Storage Scale System 6.1.8.2 for IBM Storage Scale System Utility Node.
For more information about the POWER9 EMS node, see Model 5105-22E server specifications.
For more information about the IBM Storage Scale System Utility Node EMS, see Model 5149-23E server
specifications.
The EMS node also serves as a third IBM Storage Scale quorum node in a configuration with one building
block.
