System Setup
Oncethe speakershavebeenplacedin the
room and connected,the remainingsteps
in the setup process are to programthe
AVR520's bassmanagement s ystemfor the
type of speakersusedin your system, c alibrate
the output levels,and setthe delaytimes used
by the surround-soundprocessor.
Youare now readyto power up the AVR520
to beginthesefinal adjustments.
1. Plugthe AC Power Cord i_) intoan
unswitched A C outlet.
2. Press the Main Power Switch []
in
untilit latchesandthe word "OFF"on the
top of the switchdisappearsinside the
front panel. Notethat the Power
Indicator []
will turn amber,indicating
that the unitisin the Standby mode.
3. Remove the protectiveplasticfilm from the
front-panellens.If left in place,the film
may affectthe performance of yourremote
control.
4. Installthe three suppliedAAA batteriesin
the remoteas shown.Becertainto follow
the (+) and (-) polarity indicators t hat are
on the to of the batterycompartment.
5.Turnthe AVR520 on either bypressingthe
SystemPower Control [] on the front
panel,or viathe remote bypressingthe
Power On Button O,
the AVR
Selector O
or anyof the Input
Selectors OO
on the remote.The
Power Indicator [] will turn greento
confirm that the unitison, andthe Main
Information Display[]
will alsolight.
Usingthe On-Screen Display
When makingthe following adjustments, y ou
may find it easierto usethe AVR520's on-
screendisplaysystem. T heseeasy-to-read dis-
playsgive you a clearpicture of the current
statusof the unit and makeit easyto see
which speaker, d elay,inputor digital selection
you are making.
Toview the on-screenmenus,makecertainyou
havemadea connectionfrom the Video
Monitor Out Jack_
on the rear panelto
the compositeor S-Videoinput of yourTVor
projector.In orderto view the AVR520'sdis-
plays,the correctvideo sourcemustbe selected
on the videodisplay.Note that the on-screen
menusare not availablewhen a component
video displayisin use.
IMPORTANTNOTE: W henviewingthe on-
screenmenususinga CRT-based projector,
plasmadisplayor any direct-viewCRT monitoror
television, i t is importantthat theynot be left on
the screenfor an extended periodof time.The
constantdisplayof a staticimagesuchasthese
menusor videogameimagesmaycausethe
imageto be permanently "burnedinto" the pro-
jectiontubes,plasmascreen or CRT. Thistypeof
damageis not covered by the AVR520warranty
andmay not be coveredbythe projector/TV set's
warranty.
TheAVR520 hastwo on-screendisplaymodes,
"Semi-OSD" and "FulI-OSD."When making
configurationadjustments, i t is recommended
that the FulI-OSD modebe used.Thiswill place
an option listing on the screen,makingit easier
to view the availableoptions.
Making ConfigurationAdjustments
ThefulI-OSD systemis availableby pressing the
OSD Button I_. Whenthis button is
pressed, t he MASTER menu(Figure1) will
appear,and adjustmentsare madefrom the
individualmenus.

Thesemi-OSD systemis also available, a llowing
you to makeadjustmentsdirectly,by pressing
the appropriatebuttonson the front panelor
remotecontrol for the specificparameterto be
adjusted.Forexample, t o changethe digital
input for anyof the sources,pressthe Digital
Select Button []li_i
on the front panelor
remote.
Touse the full OSDmenusystem,pressthe
OSD Button I_. When the menu is on the
screen,pressthe A/v Buttons I_t until the
on-screenI_ cursoris next to the item you wish
to adjust,and then pressthe Set Button
to adjustthat item.Notethat the menuswill
remainon the screenfor 20 seconds, a ndthen
they will "time-out" and disappearfrom the
screen. T hetime-out may be increased t o as
muchas 50 seconds by going to the
ADVANCED
SELECT
menu,and
changingthe item titled FULL
OSD
TIME
OUT.
Note that when the full OSDsystemis in use,
the menu selectionsare not shown in the
Main Information Display [][].
Whenthe
full OSDmenu systemisused, O SDON will
appearin the Main Information Display []
and the OSD Indicator [] will light to remind
you that a video displaymustbe used. W hen
the semi-OSD systemis usedin conjunction
with the discreteconfigurationbuttons,the on-
screendisplaywill show a singleline of text
with the currentmenu selection. T hat selection
will alsobe shown in the Main Information
Display I_1.
Setting the SystemConfiguration
Memory
TheAVR520 featuresan advancedmemory
systemthat enablesyou to establishdifferent
configurations for the speakerconfiguration,
digital input, surroundmode,delay times,
crossover frequencyand output levelsfor each
input source.Thisflexibilityenablesyou to
custom-tailorthe way in which you listento
eachsourceand havethe AVR520 memorize
thosesettings.Thismeans,for example, t hat
you may usedifferent output levelsor trimsfor
different sources, o r set different speakercon-
figurationswith the resultantchangesto the
bassmanagement s ystem.Oncethese settings
are made,they will automaticallybe recalled
wheneveryou selectthat input.
Thefactorydefault settingsfor the AVR520
haveall inputsexceptfor DVDconfiguredfor
an analogaudio input exceptfor the DVD
input, wherethe Coaxial Digital Input
is the default.Thedefault speakersettingsare
for "Large" speakers at the front left/right,
"Small" at all other positions,andfor the
Subwooferset as beingon. However, o ncethe
DSPprocessing systemis usedfor the first time
for any input, the speakersettingswill auto-
maticallydefault to "Small" at all positions
with the subwooferset to "LFE."Thedefault
settingfor the surroundmodesis "Surround
Off," or two-channelstereo,although Dolby
Digitalor DTSwill automaticallybe selectedas
appropriatewhen a sourcewith digital encod-
ing is in use.
Beforeusingthe unit, you will probablywant
to changethe settingsfor most inputssothat
they are properlyconfiguredto reflectthe use
of digital or analog inputs,the type of speakers
installedandthe surroundmodespecificsof
your hometheater system.Remember that
