Glossary
OSI Model
Short for Open System Interconnection, an ISO standard for worldwide communications that
defines a networking framework for implementing protocols in seven layers. Control is passed
from one layer to the next, starting at the application layer in one station, proceeding to the
bottom layer, over the channel to the next station and back up the hierarchy.
OSPF
OSPF (Open Shortest Path First) is a router protocol used within larger autonomous system
networks in preference to the Routing Information Protocol (RIP), an older routing protocol that
is installed in many of today's corporate networks. Like RIP, OSPF is designated by the Internet
Engineering Task Force (IETF) as one of several Interior Gateway Protocols (IGPs).
PEAP
Protected Extensible Authentication Protocol. A protocol developed jointly by Microsoft, RSA
Security and Cisco for transmitting authentication data, including passwords, over 802.11
wireless networks.
Ping
A utility to determine whether a specific IP address is accessible. It works by sending a packet to
the specified address and waiting for a reply. PING is used primarily to troubleshoot Internet
connections. There are many freeware and shareware Ping utilities available for personal
computers.
POE
Power over Ethernet, a solution where electrical current is run to networking hardware over the
Ethernet Category 5 or higher data cabling.
Point-to-Point
Communications between two devices.
Port
A physical connection on a switch or hub (i.e. an Ethernet Port), or a logical number on which an
IP connection is made. There are 65,535 possible IP ports. This is the equivalent of having
65,535 channels on which to communicate.

PPPoE
PPPoE (Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet) is a specification for connecting multiple computer
users on an Ethernet local area network to a remote site through common customer premises
equipment, which is the telephone company's term for a modem and similar devices. PPPoE can
be used to have an office or building-full of users share a common Digital Subscriber Line (DSL),
cable modem, or wireless connection to the Internet. PPPoE combines the Point-to-Point Protocol
(PPP), commonly used in dialup connections, with the Ethernet protocol, which supports multiple
users in a local area network. The PPP protocol information is encapsulated within an Ethernet
frame.
PRI
Primary Rate Interface ISDN provides a channelized T1 interface (1.544Mbps) supporting 23
bearer channels and one signaling channel. This yields 23 voice lines per ISDN-PRI circuit.
Promiscuous
A configuration of a network interface card (NIC) in which the NIC passes all packets to the CPU,
Mode
instead of just packets addressed to it. Promiscuous mode is required to do packet captures for
protocol analysis on a PC.
Protocol
A set of formal rules defining how data is sent and received on a network or wireless connection
Proxy
The process of acting on behalf of the intended host. A frequent use is the 'Proxy Server,' which
interacts with Internet resources such as Web servers, and caches the Web content for internal
clients.
PSTN
Public Switched Telephone Network.
QoS
Quality Of Service. This is a measure of the telephone service quality provided to a subscriber.
It is typically a subjective measurement. It is an easier measure to quantify for digital circuits
since you can assign specific error conditions and compare them such as in a LAN or WAN. In
networking, QoS refers to a method of managing the quality of the packet delivery based on
these QoS measurements.
Real-Time
The delivery of data or voice as it occurs with minimal or no delays from the moment the data or
voice is produced. This results in a continuous stream of data or voice with breaks in the delivery.
