Adjustable monitoring angle (Arm Stand)
When the BA-330 is placed in a low position, such as on the floor, you can use the arm stand to change its angle for greater clarity from the speaker. It can also be mounted on a separately available speaker stand.

Connect a second unit for more output (Stereo Link)
You can increase the output by connecting two BA-330 units. This type of setup also allows you to use up to four mic inputs and eight stereo inputs (including AUX).

Steps to Take Before Powering Up

When using batteries

Installing batteries

1. Remove two screws.
2. Remove the battery cover.
3. Insert the batteries, taking care to orient them as shown in the illustration.

Removing the battery case

Although you can replace the batteries while the battery case is still attached, it's easier to replace the batteries if you remove the battery case.

1. Remove two screws.
2. Remove the battery case.

* We recommend that you keep batteries installed in the unit even though you'll be powering it with the AC adaptor. That way, you'll be able to continue a performance even if the cord of the AC adaptor gets accidentally disconnected from the unit.
* To prevent malfunction or speaker damage when installing or replacing batteries, you must switch off this unit's power before connecting it to other equipment.
*Do not allow any foreign metal objects to touch the terminals of the battery case. Doing so may cause the batteries to short and the battery case may overheat or catch fire.

Regarding the batteries

Batteries that can be used
Use 8 AA alkaline batteries or AA nickel-metal hydride batteries.
* The BA-330 is not able to recharge nickel-metal hydride batteries. Batteries must be charged using a separately sold, commercially available charger.

Battery life (varies according to conditions of use)

• Alkaline

  MAX about 10 hours
  ECO about 15 hours

* Be aware that if nickel-metal hydride batteries are used, the battery life-span will decrease as charging cycles are repeated.

* When operating on battery power only, the unit's indicator will become blink when battery power gets too low. Replace the battery as soon as possible.

Cautions Regarding Batteries

• Carefully follow the installation instructions for batteries, and make sure you observe the correct polarity.
• Avoid using new batteries together with used ones. In addition, avoid mixing different types of batteries.
• Carefully read and observe all cautions and instructions that accompany the batteries you use.
• If using nickel-metal hydride batteries, you must use the combination of batteries and charger specified by the manufacturer.
• Remove the batteries whenever the unit is to remain unused for an extended period of time.
• If a battery has leaked, use a soft piece of cloth or paper towel to wipe all remnants of the discharge from the battery compartment. Then install new batteries. To avoid inflammation of the skin, make sure that none of the battery discharge gets onto your hands or skin. Exercise the utmost caution so that none of the discharge gets near your eyes. Immediately rinse the affected area with running water if any of the discharge has entered the eyes.
• Never keep batteries together with metallic objects such as ballpoint pens, necklaces, hairpins, etc.

Connecting the AC adaptor

*You must use the included AC adaptor. Using any other AC adaptor may cause malfunction or fire.

1. Make sure that the [POWER] switch is turned off.
2. Connect the included power cord to the included AC adaptor.
3. Connect the AC adaptor to the [DC IN] jack.
   Insert it until you hear it click into place.
4. Connect the power cord to an AC outlet.

Simple Operation Guide

Powering up and producing sound

1. Set all volume controls to "0. "
   
2. Connect your microphones, instruments, portable audio player, or other equipment.
   For details on connections, refer to "Example connections".
   1. Make sure that the volume knobs of all connected devices are set to "0."
   2. Switch on power to the connected equipment.
3. Switch on the BA-330's power.
   
4. Set the volume of each channel to the middle position.
   Also adjust the volume of the connected equipment.
   
5. Use the MASTER [VOLUME] to adjust the volume.
   

* Turn on power to your various devices in the order specified. By turning on devices in the wrong order, you risk causing malfunction and/or damage to speakers and other devices.
* To prevent malfunction and/or damage to speakers or other devices, always turn down the volume, and turn off the power on all devices before making any connections.
* This unit is equipped with a protection circuit. A brief interval (a few seconds) after power up is required before the unit will operate normally.
* Always make sure to have the volume level turned down before switching on power. Even with the volume all the way down, you may still hear some sound when the power is switched on, but this is normal, and does not indicate a malfunction.

Applying an effect

1. Turn on the [EFFECT] switch for the channels to which you want to apply an effect.
   
2. Turn the [EFFECT] knob to adjust the type and amount of effect.
   

Adjusting the tone quality

Adjusting the tone of each channel
Turn the [TONE] knob of the channel that you want to adjust.

Adjusting the high and low ranges of the overall sound (Equalizer)
Use the [LOW] knob to boost or cut the low-frequency range.
Use the [HIGH] knob to boost or cut the high-frequency range.

Set the FS-5L's or FS-5U's polarity switch as shown below.

When making the connection using the FS-6, set the POLARITY and MODE switches as shown below.

* When connection cables with resistors are used, the volume level of equipment connected to the inputs may be low. If this happens, use connection cables that do not contain resistors.

Set this to the appropriate position according to whether a microphone or an instrument (a lineoutput device) is connected to CH1 and CH2.
Microphone: Set to "MIC"

CH3/CH4 and CH5/CH6 are stereo.

Power supply related
[BATTERY CHECK/MUTE] switch
When switched on, the indicator blinks, and sound will no longer be produced from the BA-330's speakers or from LINE OUT.

BATTERY indicator
When you press the [CHECK/MUTE] switch, this indicator shows the amount of power remaining in the batteries.

* The remaining battery power indication is only an approximation.

[OUTPUT POWER] switch
If this is set to "ECO, " the volume from the BA-330's speakers will be reduced, allowing extended use when running on batteries.

[POWER] switch
This turns the BA-330's power on/off. When this is on, the POWER indicator will light.

[EFFECT] knob
This knob selects the effect type and adjusts its depth for channels whose [EFFECT] switch is "ON. "

Effect type
REVERB
This produces the pleasant reverberation that accompanies a performance in a concert hall.
DELAY
This produces an echo-like effect by delaying the sound.
WIDE
This extends the sound field to the outer edge of the speakers, producing the sensation of being surrounded by sound.

EQUALIZER
This lets you adjust the tone by boosting or cutting the low and high ranges independently.
[LOW] knob
This adjusts the low-frequency tone.
[HIGH] knob
This adjusts the high-frequency tone.
MASTER [VOLUME] knob
This adjusts the overall volume of the output from the BA-330's speakers.

CH1, CH2 (monaural)
CH3/CH4, CH5/CH6 (stereo)
[TONE] knob
This adjusts the tone of the instrument connected to each channel. Turning the knob toward the right makes the tone brighter.

[EFFECT] switch
Turning this "ON" allows the reverb, delay, or wide effect to be applied to the channel.

CH [VOLUME] knob
This adjusts the volume of the device connected to each channel.
Turning the knob toward the right increases the volume.
* The level knobs of unused channels should be set to "0. "

If something is connected to both the XLR connector and phone connector at the same time, the phone jack will be given priority.

Wiring diagrams for these jacks are shown below. Make connections after first checking the wiring diagrams of other equipment you intend to connect.

Connect the included AC adaptor here.
* You can also connect the commercially available cable for an external power device.

FOOT SW jack
You can use a foot switch to turn MUTE (FS-5L) and EFFECT (FS-5U) on/off.
MEMO
If only one foot switch is connected using a monaural cable, only the MUTE function can be switched.

Output (LINE OUT) jacks
Connect these jacks to your mixer or recorder. If you're outputting in monaural, connect the L/MONO jack.
MEMO
The EQUALIZER knobs and the MASTER [VOLUME] knob do not affect the LINE OUT jacks.

Stereo link (STEREO LINK) jacks
These jacks are used when you want to connect two BA-330 units to create a stereo system with greater output power.
For details, refer to "Connecting an additional unit to increase the output (Stereo Link)".

Input (AUX IN) jack
Connect the following equipment

• CD player
• Portable audio player, etc.
• Computer, etc.

Use the [LEVEL] knob to adjust the volume.

The RCA phono jacks and mini-jack can be used simultaneously.

Various Applications

Mini-concert with two guitarists

Using just a single BA-330, two singer-instrumentalists can connect two microphones and two guitars, and perform a mini-concert. You can also apply reverb to the microphones and guitars.

You can connect your computer as well as your microphone so that the sound from your computer will also be heard by the audience, making your presentation more effective.

Convenient Features

Suppressing feedback

What is feedback

Feedback occurs when sound that's being output from a speaker enters a microphone or pickup and is amplified and output again from the speaker, producing an unpleasant oscillation (a squealing or howling noise).

Using the anti-feedback function

What is the anti-feedback function?
This function suppresses the feedback that can occur between a guitar or microphone and the amplifier. It does so by attenuating the sound of the frequency at which feedback is occurring.
The BA-330 lets you suppress feedback by using a single switch.

1. Turn the [ANTI-FEEDBACK] switch "ON."
   The anti-feedback function will be applied to the microphones or guitars connected to the CH1 and CH2 inputs.
   

We recommend that you turn the anti-feedback function "ON" before you begin performing, since this will prevent feedback during your performance.

NOTE
The anti-feedback function will be optimized each time you turn on the BA-330's power.

MEMO
Howling could be produced depending on the location of microphones relative to speakers. This can be remedied by:

1. Changing the orientation of the microphone(s).
2. Relocating microphone(s) at a greater distance from speakers.
3. Lowering volume levels.

Connecting an additional unit to increase the output (Stereo Link)

By connecting two BA-330 units you can create a stereo PA system with greater output power.
This function is called "Stereo Link."
You can connect Stereo Link in either of the following two ways.

• If using the input jacks of only one of the units Use one cable with a 1/4" phone plug
• If you want to use the input jacks of both units Use two cables having 1/4" phone plugs

Connection when using the input jacks of only one unit

If you want to connect input sources to the BA-330 (L)
Up to 6 input devices can be connected.

1. Connect the devices to the BA-330 (L).
2. Connect the STEREO LINK OUT R jack on the BA-330 (L) and the STEREO LINK IN jack on the BA-330 (R).
3. Turn on both BA-330 (L) and BA-330 (R).
4. Adjust the volume levels on all devices.
5. Adjust the BA-330 (L) and BA-330 (R) volume levels separately using their [VOLUME] knobs.

If you want to connect input sources to the BA-330 (R)
As described in "Connecting input devices to the L-channel BA-330," connect the R-channel unit's STEREO LINK OUT L jack to the L-channel unit's STEREO LINK IN jack.

Connections that allow the input jacks of both units to be used

This arrangement lets you play in stereo, making maximum use of the two BA-330s' mixer functions (with 12 inputs).

1. Connect the devices to the BA-330 (L) and BA-330 (R).
2. Connect the STEREO LINK OUT R jack on the BA-330 (L) and the STEREO LINK IN jack on the BA-330 (R).
3. Connect the STEREO LINK OUT L jack on the BA-330 (R) and the STEREO LINK IN jack on the BA-330 (L).
4. Turn on both BA-330 (L) and BA-330 (R).
5. Adjust the volume levels on all devices.
6. Adjust the BA-330 (L) and BA-330 (R) volume levels separately using their [VOLUME] knobs.

Adjusting the volume and tone quality

Adjust the L and R volume levels separately using their MASTER [VOLUME] knobs. You can adjust the EQUALIZER ([LOW]/[HIGH] knobs) independently for the L and R sides. Basically, they should be set to the same positions, but you can adjust each one as necessary to suit the needs of a particular setup.

Using a stand

Using the unit stand

When using the BA-330 on floors, or in other low-lying positions, then setting up and using the arm stand can make it easier to hear the sound from the speakers.

Using the arm stand

1. Turn the BA-330 over and raise the arm stand.
   
2. Place the BA-330 on a flat and level surface.
   

• When turning the unit upside-down, handle with care to avoid dropping it, or allowing it to fall or tip over.
• When using the arm stand, always be sure to place it so the BA-330 remains level.
• When not using the arm stand, fold it up.
• Never lift up and carry the BA-330 by holding the folding stand.
• Never place any objects on top of the BA-330 when using the arm stand. Also, never sit or lean on the folding stand.
• When folding the folding stand, be careful not to pinch your fingers.

Using a speaker stand

Option: ST-A95
By using a speaker stand (Option: ST-A95), you can mount the BA-330 at the optimal height for use as a monitor speaker or simple PA device.

Attachment procedure
NOTE
Always have at least one other person assist you when mounting the BA-330 on a speaker stand, or when adjusting the height of the stand while the BA-330 remains mounted on it.

NOTE
Be careful not to pinch your fingers, when you assemble.

1. Loosen tripod knob and open the tripod.
   After opening the tripod, tighten the tripod knob again.
   * The distance between lower ends of the tripod should be 98cm as shown in figures on the below. If the tripod is not opened wide enough, the stand may be unstable.
   
2. Loosen height adjustment knob and make upper tube longer.
3. Set up upper tube at the required height and insert the stopper into the hole in upper tube (refer to following figure).
   * Use the ST-A95 only with the stopper inserted into upper tube.
   
4. Tighten height adjustment knob.
5. Fit the hole on the BA-330 onto upper tube.

• The BA-330 is designed to be used in combination with the speaker stand manufactured by Roland (ST-A95). Please do not use any other stands.
• Before use, adjust the speaker stand to a height of 130 cm (51-3/16") or less and a leg spread of 98 cm (38-5/8") or more, as shown in the figure below.
  
• Using a speaker stand that does not meet the specifications at left or that is adjusted to a height over 130 cm (51-3/16"), or a leg spread of less than 98 cm (38-5/8") may result in damage to equipment or injury due to the stand tipping over.
• When using BA-330 with a speaker stand, the speaker stand must be carefully placed so it is level and sure to remain stable.
• Cables connected to BA-330 should be given enough slack to prevent accidents that might result from someone tripping over them.
• To prevent accidents due to falls, do not place any object on the BA-330 when it's mounted on a speaker stand.

ALWAYS OBSERVE THE FOLLOWING

• Connect mains plug of this model to a mains socket outlet with a protective earthing connection.

If not using a rack or stand, you still need to make sure that any location you choose for placing the unit provides a level surface that will properly support the unit, and keep it from wobbling.
• Be sure to use only the AC adaptor supplied with the unit. Also, make sure the line voltage at the installation matches the input voltage specified on the AC adaptor's body. Other AC adaptor's may use a different polarity, or be designed for a different voltage, so their use could result in damage, malfunction, or electric shock.
  
• Use only the attached power-supply cord. Also, the supplied power cord must not be used with any other device.

  Do not excessively twist or bend the power cord, nor place heavy objects on it. Doing so can damage the cord, producing severed elements and short circuits. Damaged cords are fire and shock hazards!
  
• This unit, either alone or in combination with an amplifier and speakers, may be capable of producing sound levels that could cause permanent hearing loss. Do not operate for a long period of time at a high volume level, or at a level that is uncomfortable. If you experience any hearing loss or ringing in the ears, you should immediately stop using the unit, and consult an audiologist.

• Immediately turn the power off, remove the AC adaptor from the outlet, and request servicing by your retailer, the nearest Roland Service Center, or an authorized Roland distributor, as listed on the "Information" page when:
  • The AC adaptor, the power-supply cord, or the plug has been damaged; or

  • Objects have fallen into, or liquid has been spilled onto the unit; or

• In households with small children, an adult should provide supervision until the child is capable of following all the rules essential for the safe operation of the unit.
• Protect the unit from strong impact. (Do not drop it!)
• Do not force the unit's power-supply cord to share an outlet with an unreasonable number of other devices. Be especially careful when using extension cords—the total power used by all devices you have connected to the extension cord's outlet must never exceed the power rating (watts/ amperes) for the extension cord. Excessive loads can cause the insulation on the cord to heat up and eventually melt through.
• Before using the unit in a foreign country, consult with your retailer, the nearest Roland Service Center, or an authorized Roland distributor, as listed on the "Information" page.
• Batteries must never be recharged, heated, taken apart, or thrown into fire or water.
  
• Never expose alkaline batteries or nickel-metal hydride batteries to excessive heat such as sunshine, fire or the like.

• The unit and the AC adaptor should be located so their location or position does not interfere with their proper ventilation.
• This (ST-A95) for use only with Roland stand (or cart) ST-A95. Use with other stands (or carts) is capable of resulting in instability causing possible injury.
• Please be sure to read and adhere to the cautionary notices contained in the instructions that came with this product. Please note that, depending on the manner in which BA-330 performances are carried out, you may encounter situations where the BA-330 falls off the stand or the stand topples over, even though you have followed all of the instructions and advice contained within the product's manual. For this reason, you should always perform a safety check each time you use the stand.
• Always grasp only the plug on the AC adaptor cord when plugging into, or unplugging from, an outlet or this unit.
• At regular intervals, you should unplug the AC adaptor and clean it by using a dry cloth to wipe all dust and other accumulations away from its prongs. Also, disconnect the power plug from the power outlet whenever the unit is to remain unused for an extended period of time. Any accumulation of dust between the power plug and the power outlet can result in poor insulation and lead to fire.
  
• Try to prevent cords and cables from becoming entangled. Also, all cords and cables should be placed so they are out of the reach of children.
• Never climb on top of, nor place heavy objects on the unit.
• Never handle the AC adaptor or its plugs with wet hands when plugging into, or unplugging from, an outlet or this unit.
• Before moving the unit, disconnect the AC adaptor and all cords coming from external devices.
• Before cleaning the unit, turn off the power and unplug the AC adaptor from the outlet.
• Whenever you suspect the possibility of lightning in your area, disconnect the AC adaptor from the outlet.
• If used improperly, batteries may explode or leak and cause damage or injury. In the interest of safety, please read and observe the following precautions.
  • Carefully follow the installation instructions for batteries, and make sure you observe the correct polarity.
  • Avoid using new batteries together with used ones. In addition, avoid mixing different types of batteries.
  • Remove the batteries whenever the unit is to remain unused for an extended period of time.
  • If a battery has leaked, use a soft piece of cloth or paper towel to wipe all remnants of the discharge from the battery compartment. Then install new batteries. To avoid inflammation of the skin, make sure that none of the battery discharge gets onto your hands or skin. Exercise the utmost caution so that none of the discharge gets near your eyes. Immediately rinse the affected area with running water if any of the discharge has entered the eyes.
  • Never keep batteries together with metallic objects such as ballpoint pens, necklaces, hairpins, etc.
• Used batteries must be disposed of in compliance with whatever regulations for their safe disposal that may be observed in the region in which you live.
• Should you remove screws, keep them in a safe place out of children's reach, so there is no chance of them being swallowed accidentally.
• Do not remove the speaker grille and speaker by any means. Speaker not user replaceable. Shock hazardous voltages and currents are present inside the enclosure.

Power Supply

Use of Batteries

• Do not connect this unit to same electrical outlet that is being used by an electrical appliance that is controlled by an inverter (such as a refrigerator, washing machine, microwave oven, or air conditioner), or that contains a motor. Depending on the way in which the electrical appliance is used, power supply noise may cause this unit to malfunction or may produce audible noise. If it is not practical to use a separate electrical outlet, connect a power supply noise filter between this unit and the electrical outlet.
• The AC adaptor will begin to generate heat after long hours of consecutive use. This is normal, and is not a cause for concern.
• Should you prefer to use batteries, please use the alkaline batteries or nickel-metal hydride batteries.
• When installing or replacing batteries, always turn off the power on this unit and disconnect any other devices you may have connected. This way, you can prevent malfunction and/or damage to speakers or other devices.
• Before connecting this unit to other devices, turn off the power to all units. This will help prevent malfunctions and/or damage to speakers or other devices.

Placement

• Using the unit near power amplifiers (or other equipment containing large power transformers) may induce hum. To alleviate the problem, change the orientation of this unit; or move it farther away from the source of interference.
• This device may interfere with radio and television reception. Do not use this device in the vicinity of such receivers.
• Noise may be produced if wireless communications devices, such as cell phones, are operated in the vicinity of this unit. Such noise could occur when receiving or initiating a call, or while conversing. Should you experience such problems, you should relocate such wireless devices so they are at a greater distance from this unit, or switch them off.
• Do not expose the unit to direct sunlight, place it near devices that radiate heat, leave it inside an enclosed vehicle, or otherwise subject it to temperature extremes. Also, do not allow lighting devices that normally are used while their light source is very close to the unit (such as a piano light), or powerful spotlights to shine upon the same area of the unit for extended periods of time. Excessive heat can deform or discolor the unit.
• When moved from one location to another where the temperature and/or humidity is very different, water droplets (condensation) may form inside the unit. Damage or malfunction may result if you attempt to use the unit in this condition. Therefore, before using the unit, you must allow it to stand for several hours, until the condensation has completely evaporated.
• Do not allow rubber, vinyl, or similar materials to remain on the unit for long periods of time. Such objects can discolor or otherwise harmfully affect the finish.
• Do not paste stickers, decals, or the like to this instrument. Peeling such matter off the instrument may damage the exterior finish.
• Depending on the material and temperature of the surface on which you place the unit, its rubber feet may discolor or mar the surface. You can place a piece of felt or cloth under the rubber feet to prevent this from happening. If you do so, please make sure that the unit will not slip or move accidentally.

Maintenance

• To clean the unit, use a dry, soft cloth; or one that is slightly dampened. Rubbing too hard in the same area can damage the finish.
• Never use benzine, thinners, alcohol or solvents of any kind, to avoid the possibility of discoloration and/or deformation.

Additional Precautions

• Use a reasonable amount of care when using the unit's buttons, sliders, or other controls; and when using its jacks and connectors. Rough handling can lead to malfunctions.
• When connecting / disconnecting all cables, grasp the connector itself—never pull on the cable. This way you will avoid causing shorts, or damage to the cable's internal elements.
• To avoid disturbing your neighbors, try to keep the unit's volume at reasonable levels (especially when it is late at night).
• When you need to transport the unit, package it in the box (including padding) that it came in, if possible. Otherwise, you will need to use equivalent packaging materials.
• Some connection cables contain resistors. Do not use cables that incorporate resistors for connecting to this unit. The use of such cables can cause the sound level to be extremely low, or impossible to hear. For information on cable specifications, contact the manufacturer of the cable.
