For proper ship ment, spec ify model, fin -
ish, tem per a ture rat ing, es cutch eon
type, and length ("A" Di men sion. Dry
hor i zon tal side wall sprin klers are or -
dered in spe cific lengths noted as the "A"
di men sion (see Fig ures 1 through 4).
The "A" di men sion is the dis tance from
the face of the fit ting (tee) to the fin ished
sur face of the wall in which it is to be in -
stalled. The dry hor i zon tal side wall
sprin kler must be or dered and man u fac -
tured spe cif i cally for one of three styles
of in stal la tion: with the ad just able re -
cessed es cutch eon (see Fig ure 1), with
the ad just able stan dard es cutch eon (see
Fig ures 2 and 3), or with the plain bar rel
(see Fig ure 4). For lim its of ad just ment for
the re cessed es cutch eon, see Fig ure 1.
De tails and lim its of ad just ment for the
stan dard es cutch eon style, with 2" (50,8
mm) of ad just ment, are shown in Fig ure 2.
6. IN STAL LA TION
WARN ING: Vi king sprin klers are man u -
fac tured and tested to meet the rigid re -
quire ments of ap prov ing agen cies. The
sprin klers are de signed to be in stalled in
ac cor dance with rec og nized in stal la tion
stan dards. De vi a tion from the stan dards
or any al ter ation to the sprin kler af ter it
leaves the fac tory in clud ing, but not lim -
ited to: paint ing, plat ing, coat ing, or mod i fi -
ca tion, may ren der the sprin kler in op er a -
tive and will au to mat i cally nul lify the ap -
proval and any guar an tee made by Vi king.
A. Vi king sprin klers are to be in -
stalled in ac cor dance with the lat -
est edi tion of Vi king tech ni cal
data, the lat est stan dards of NFPA,
FM Global, Loss Pre ven tion Coun -
TECH NI CAL DATA
1. De ter mine the dis tance from face of tee to face
of fin ished wall.
2. Round to nearest 1/4" (6,35 mm) be tween 3-1/4"
and 47-1/2" (82,5 mm and 1 207 mm).
NOTE: The sprin kler will be recessed approximately
5/16" (7,9 mm) with 5/8" (15,8 mm) horizontal
ad just ment

The use of dry hor i zon tal side wall
sprin klers may be lim ited due to
oc cu pancy and haz ard. Re fer to
the AHJ prior to in stal la tion.
B. Sprin klers must be han dled with care.
They must be stored in a cool, dry place
in their orig i nal con tainer. Never in stall
sprin klers that have been dropped,
dam aged in any way, or ex posed to
tem per a tures in ex cess of the max i -
mum am bi ent tem per a ture al lowed (re -
fer to Ta ble 1). Such sprin klers
should be de stroyed. Never in stall
any glass-bulb sprin kler if the bulb is
cracked or if there is a loss of liq uid from
the bulb. If a glass bulb lacks the ap -
pro pri ate amount of fluid, it should be
set aside and re turned to Vi king (or
an au tho rized Vi king dis trib u tor) for
anal y sis as soon as pos si ble. If the
sprin kler is not re turned to Vi king, it
should be im me di ately destroyed.
C. Viking Stan dard Re sponse Dry Hor i -
zon tal Side wall Sprin klers are not in -
tended for use in cor ro sive en vi ron -
ments. Use only sprin klers listed for
cor ro sive en vi ron ments when sub -
ject to cor ro sive at mo spheres.
WARNING: Vi king dry sprin klers are
to be in stalled in the 1" out let or run of
mal lea ble or duc tile iron threaded tee
fit tings that meet the di men sional re -

150), or cast iron threaded tee fit tings
that meet the di men sional re quire -
ments of ANSI B16.4 (Class 125),
even at branch line ends. The
threaded end of the dry sprin kler is de -
signed to al low the seal to pen e trate
and ex tend into the fit ting to a pre de -
ter mined depth. This pre vents con -
den sa tion from ac cu mu lat ing and
freez ing over the sprin kler seal.
1. DO NOT in stall the dry side wall
sprin kler into a threaded el bow,
cou pling, or any other fit ting that
could in ter fere with thread pen e tra -
tion. Such in stal la tion will dam -
age the brass seal.
2. DO NOT in stall the dry side wall sprin -
kler into a cou pling or fit ting that will
al low con den sa tion to ac cu mu late
above the seal, when lo cated in an
area sub ject to freez ing.
3. NEVER try to mod ify the dry hor i zon -
tal side wall sprin kler. The sprin klers
are man u fac tured for spe cific "A" di -
men sions and can not be mod i fied.
D. The sprin kler must be in stalled af ter
the pip ing is in place to pre vent me -
chan i cal dam age. Keep sprin klers with
pro tec tive caps or bulb shields con -
tained within the caps or shields dur ing
in stal la tion and test ing, and any time
the sprin kler is shipped or han dled.

and the sprin kler is the ap pro pri ate
model and style, or i fice size, and
tem per a ture rat ing.
