The Vi king Stan dard Re sponse Dry
Side wall Sprin kler is a thermosensitive
glass-bulb spray sprin kler, suit able for
use in ar eas sub ject to freez ing. It is
designed for dry sys tems and preaction
sys tems where it is nec es sary to pre vent
wa ter or con den sa tion from en ter ing the
sup ply nip ple be fore the sprin kler op er -
ates. It may also be in stalled in spaces
sub ject to freez ing and sup plied from a
wet sys tem in an ad ja cent heated area.
The as sem bly fea tures a sealed brass in let
and a du ra ble, threaded steel bar rel with an
elec tro de pos it ed ep oxy base coat ing. The
sprin kler is of the Model M de sign with a 5
mm glass bulb and hor i zon tal side wall de -
flec tor. The Vi king Stan dard Re sponse Dry
Hor i zon tal Side wall Sprin kler is avail able in
sev eral fin ishes and tem per a ture rat ings to
meet de sign re quire ments.
The seal at the threaded end of the as -
sem bly is held in place by force trans mit -
ted from the com pres sion screw, through
the glass bulb and in ter nal parts, onto a
spe cial seal ing spring. Dur ing fire con di -
tions, the heat-sensitive liq uid in the glass
bulb ex pands, caus ing the glass to shat -
ter, re leas ing the in ter nal parts to open the
wa ter way. Wa ter flow ing through the
sprin kler or i fice strikes the sprin kler de -
flec tor, form ing a uni form spray pat tern to
ex tin guish or con trol the fire.
The Vi king Stan dard Re sponse Dry Hor -
i zon tal Side wall Sprin kler may be in -
stalled with the bar rel ex posed (re fer to
Fig ure 4 on page 102 d), or with one of
two es cutch eon styles:
• For re cessed in stal la tions, a re cessed
style es cutch eon with up to 5/8" (15,8
mm) ad just ment (see Fig ure 1 on page
102 b), is avail able.
• For stan dard in stal la tions, the sprin kler
is avail able with an ad just able, sur -
face-mounted es cutch eon, fin ished to
al low up to 2" (50,8 mm) of ad just ment
(see Fig ures 2 and 3 on page 102 c).

Vi king Stan dard Re sponse Dry Hor i zon -
tal Side wall Sprin klers are avail able in
1/4" (6,35 mm) in cre ments for the re -
cessed style, and in ½" (12,7 mm) in cre -
ments for the ad just able stan dard es -
cutch eon style, and the plain bar rel
style, in stalled with no es cutch eon.
These sprin klers may be or dered in min -
i mum lengths from 1-1/2" (38,1 mm) for
the ad just able stan dard style, 3" (76,2
mm) for the plain bar rel style, and 3-1/4"
(82,5 mm) for the ad just able re cessed
style. They have list ings and ap prov als
with a max i mum length of 45-1/2" (1 156
mm) for the ad just able stan dard style*,
47" (1 194 mm) for the plain bar rel style*,
and 47-1/2" (1 207 mm) for the ad just -
able re cessed style*.
* Lengths over the stan dard length are avail able, with
no ap prov als, on a "made-to-order" ba sis:
• Re cessed Dry HSW up to 65-1/2" (1 664 mm).
• Ad just able Stan dard Dry HSW up to 63-1/2" (1
613 mm).
• Plain Bar rel Dry HSW up to 65" (1 651 mm).
