HOUSEHOLD MAINTENANCE AROUND THE SOLAR STORAGE TANK
Care should be taken when conducting general household maintenance, such as lawn mowing and grass
cutting, around the solar storage tank. Careless use of devices such as a whipper snipper could damage or
cut a sensor lead or electrical cable.
If a sensor lead or electrical cable is damaged or cut, solar contribution may not be achieved. In addition, if the
electrical cable has been damaged or cut, wiring may be exposed leading to a dangerous situation.
On a regular basis, inspect around the water heater for insect infestations, such as ants. Insects may look for
a warm place to nest, particularly in wet weather. Insects encroaching into or nesting in the water heater and
the solar control unit can interfere with the operation of the water heater and also damage components. Spray
insecticide around the base of the water heater if necessary to rid the area of insects. Refer to
Maintenance Every Six Months"
MINOR MAINTENANCE EVERY SIX MONTHS
It is recommended minor maintenance be performed every six (6) months. Minor maintenance can be
performed by the dwelling occupant.
Switch off the electrical supply at the power outlet to the water heater prior to performing general maintenance.
This will prevent the water heater from operating while you clean or spray around the water heater. Switch on
the electrical supply at the power outlet to the water heater when finished performing the general maintenance.
The minor maintenance includes:
Operate the easing lever on the temperature pressure relief valve. It is very important the lever is raised
and lowered gently. Refer to
Warning: Water discharged from the temperature pressure relief valve drain line will be hot. Exercise
care to avoid any splashing of water by standing clear of the drain line's point of discharge when operating
the valve's easing lever.
Operate the easing lever on the expansion control valve (if fitted). It is very important the lever is raised
and lowered gently. Refer to
The jacket of the gas booster can be cleaned with a soft cloth and warm mild soapy water if required.
Under no circumstances should abrasive materials or powders be used.
Inspect around the air inlet, flue terminal and the gas booster in general for plant growth.
Trim back any shrubs, bushes or other plants which have encroached around the gas booster.
Plant growth across the air inlet and flue terminal can interfere with the performance of the gas
booster.
Inspect around the solar storage tank and gas booster for infestations of insects, such as ants. Insects
encroaching into or nesting in the solar storage tank or gas booster can interfere with the operation of the
water heater and also damage components. The area around the solar storage tank and gas booster can
be sprayed with insecticide to rid the area of insects.
Warning: Do not spray insecticide near the solar storage tank and gas booster while they are
operating. Propellants in many insect sprays contain hydrocarbons which are flammable. Gases from
aerosol sprays may also become corrosive when drawn into a flame.
If necessary to rid the area of insects:
Ensure the electrical supply at the power outlets to the solar storage tank and gas booster have
been switched off.
Spray the affected are, taking care not to spray into the air inlet or flue terminal or onto the surface
of the gas booster.
Wait a few minutes to allow any aerosol gases to dissipate before switching on the electrical
supply at the power outlets to the solar storage tank and gas booster.
