in a region of specific interest. For example, you
may want to view only the region just below the
water surface in front of your boat. Thus, you
might limit your vertical sector width to 30 degrees
and steer it up to the surface (at 15 degrees - see
figure at right).
The Sector Width can be reduced in six-degree
increments from a maximum of 90 degrees in the
vertical and 180 degrees in the horizontal to a min-
imum of six degrees in either scan direction. Sec-
tor Steer defines direction of the center of the sec-
tor. This direction is limited by the width of the
sector. For example, a vertical sector of 90-degree
width can only be pointed in the 45-degree direc-
tion and a horizontal sector of 180-degree width
can only be pointed in the 90-degree direction.
Drag the slide bars to change the settings.
The Reset button maximizes the sector width for
the current scan direction and centers the sector's
orientation.

Scan Mode and Method

For scanned displays, PC/180 provides several
scanning options. To adjust the scanning Mode
and Method, select Scan from the Adjust menu.

Vertical Scan

PC/180 can operate in one of three resolutions for
the vertical scan. In the Normal scanning mode,
PC/180 will send out 30 forward beams and give
medium resolution. Detail mode offers the maxi-
mum resolution with 90 beams. Fast mode uses 15
forward beams and provides the fastest update but
the lowest resolution.
There are two scanning methods available for the
vertical scan; a traditional Swept mode and a
Hopped mode where the beam direction hops to
different areas in a pseudo-random fashion.
Hopped mode is useful for getting a faster idea of
changing forward conditions, particularly at short
ranges.
